I'm planning to move out in my next job and i've ruled out getting a morgage. I did a budget spreadsheet for a first time buyer home, very basic and included frugal values for socialising etc and i had about £30 left after taxes, morgage payments, insurance etc

I seriously recommend you try to get into a graduate scheme - why? Decent money, career opportunities and generally most offer a good all round package + a change of scenery/social life. It seems to be alot of peopLe I know have had great social lives just simply renting with a bunch of other people and meeting their mates etc. Anyway I barely survive on what I am on and I live with my parents. You need to be on at least 20 k + to be able to rent and live a basic level of existence. No way would you get a mortgage on 20 k either. Edited October 28, 2009 by Jiser

Considering you get people str8 out of college who go to 1st line on 18k. Why are you doing this job? Unless there was nothing else or you have a specific reason? Put it this way - People during my placement year at Uni were on 15k and that was with no experience at all apart from 2 years at uni which in most cases amounts to buger all.
featured_spectre Posted October 28, 2009 Posted October 28, 2009 I recently qualified in Paedeatric First Aid and the regular First Aid, now I volounteer 30 mins a day at a nursery where I hope my daughter goes too. I know its not good for money but the social side is that the kids are loons (in the fun sense) and the staff are up for a laugh and go out every friday for a drink. I bring my other half along and we all get along greatly! Maybe something you could look into?

Put it this way - People during my placement year at Uni were on 15k and that was with no experience at all apart from 2 years at uni which in most cases amounts to buger all. i was on 11k. 8 years ago. while on industrial placement. private sector. plus got a company mobile phone. it's strange that some employers can't beat what was offered to a university student with zero experience, back when labour hadn't even got started with spending multi-billions in health and education. In some areas the cost of buying a house has gone up 200% since then. and this is progress ?

I researched nursing and although the funding would be provided by the NHS and i would be entitled to a bursary, i dont think i could handle going back to a part time job and loss of responsibility that comes with it.

Imagine the sheer enjoyment factor of getting up (or not depending on the weather factor/ whether you want to get up or not) in a morning and just doing what you want with no questions asked and having the money and health to do it. :)

Imagine its quite hard in Devon if your in the more rural of locations. Get some I.T. certs under your belt to make you look better.

Nickw1985 Posted November 7, 2009 Posted November 7, 2009 I was on £10k at my placement job - I had to keep my previous job to see it through - 57.5 hours a week. That was in 2007 - I'm not too bothered, since it looks wicked on the CV!
