I'm getting an IP address conflict on a laptop but there isn't really a conflict as far as I can tell so I'm beginning to suspect a faulty NIC.

The unit gets it's IP from DHCP but I've also tried setting a different manual IP and I still get the same result. If I look in the event log it tells me the IP and MAC address of the other client but when I run arp -a the MAC that is listed is one of our servers and that has an entirely different static IP set.

I've used Look@LAN and I can only find one instance of this IP on the network when the laptop is on, if I turn it off nothing shows. I've also cleared the ARP cache.

Any ideas how I can resolve this issue?

This is an old Toshiba Satellite Pro A10 laptop funning Windows XP SP3

Thanks.

Are there any stale records in DNS causing this?

We don't tend to get many but I've cleared a couple that I can see.

Have you got two (or more) IP addresses set by mistake?

Additional addresses are only visible from the Advanced button of TCP/IP network properties.

Run ipconfig /all to check.

Checked that and there is only one IP set.

What happens when you delete the reservation/record from the DHCP server?

I deleted the IP from DHCP and this removed the DNS entry, IPConfig /release then renew and the laptop received the same address and still complained of a conflict.

In the end I've set a reservation that forces it to take a different DHCP address and it's stopped complaining but as before there is nothing showing on the other IP now the laptop isn't using it. All very odd.

I've scanned the IP with look@host and it doesn't detect any running services and I can't ping it, I'm pretty certain that there is nothing on the IP. The fact that the ARP cache on the laptop lists one of our servers holding that IP (it doesn't) suggests an error.

cloned mac id address daft question

I suppose that's a possibility but the unit with the cloned MAC would still have to be on the same IP, as I say I can find no evidence of another unit using that IP.

Out of interest, do you have any Vista or Windows 7 machines on the network too?

We get this occasionally on our few remaining XP clients and the XP Embedded winterms - the perception is that it started once we moved over to a mainly Vista network some years ago.

I was running a Windows 7 box in testing for a while that did keep messing up the browse list by forcing elections all the time, killing the computer browser service on the box sorted that. Currently we don't have any Vista or Windows 7 stuff running on the network.
