XP Pro and DHCP

My Setup:

 

192.168.0.1 - DC / DNS / FS

192.168.0.2 - DC / DNS / FS

192.168.0.3 - DC / DHCP / FS

(and soon to be) 192.168.0.4 - DC / DHCP / FS

Subnet 255.255.0.0

 

The problem is, that one of our teacher laptops has a annoying problem. (No it's not the teacher that's annoying!!!). She uses her laptop at home and her home router issues a IP of 192.168.0.2, and when she brings it into school the DHCP server doesn't issue her with a new IP address, therefore it causes a conflict on the server.

 

She has to then reboot it, although sometimes the "repair" option works, to get it to work as the subnet mask is incorrect and the IP Address is conflicting.

 

 

Anyone got any ideas as to why this is happening? Will it need a re-ghost or is there a workaround

Strange as XP normally checks-in with the DHCP server even if the lease is more than the time before she comes back to school. Sure she isnt hibernating / standby'in the laptop??

Not sure but also maybe those leases that are permanent can cause strange probs?

 

If so disable stdby/hibernate so she has to a full boot!

 

This is not a good network practice as it can effect any host that happens to end up on that address! Yeh I know end-users wont understand but ya know

 

Have had this problem with users who refuse to log out of sims and just want to stay logged in all the time. One user was constantly having problems due to what I can only describe as arrogance to what I was asking! Sure you wont have that problem though

2 options I can think of aside from the power management option in the NIC properties in device manager disabling and power management options as mentioned above are

 

1. Create a hardware profile - one for work and one for home

2. On the network card(s) have an alternate configuration set as dhcp and the main IP Address set statically to an ip address you can reserve in dhcp using the network cards mac addresses, that way if it cant use the static ip at her house then it will just use dhcp or you can set it the other way around so dhcp by normal and a static ip for work.

 

3. Use an IP Alias to assign another ip to the network card on the correct subnet mask / ip address range on your network ( again maybe reserving it in dhcp via mac address of said network adaptors )

 

Not sure if this is an option but maybe get her to bring her home router in and re configure it for her to same subnet mask as your works subnet mask with relevant settings with regards to it dishing it local ip addresses etc
