Printer Setup + Winsuite

Hi

 

I've just started at this school where i can't for hell find how the printer has been setup on machines across the school!

 

The school is using winsuite and for some reason i can't find anything on the server where it could point out as to how the printers are connected.

 

I have even tried to move computers to different OU but the printer seems to be setup according to the name of the computer rather than OU!!!

 

WOuld this be the case? Can anyone help as to where i could check for this?

 

Strange thing is you can add printers if teachers log on and it will remember that printer on that machine but obviously this is restricted for pupils.

On the server there should be a Winsuite Administrator Console. If you open this, and browse the tabs, one of them should be for the printer set up. Sorry it's abit vague. One of my schools does use Winsuite but only for the log in screen at the beginning, and the Customised desktop, everything else is done through Group Policy on the server.

I can't find the administrator console!!!

 

The only thing on there is the Policy manager for winsuite, no console!

Could also be set up via a login script? Printer script can be set to check for the name of the computer and give access to specific printers that way.

What version of Winsuite are you using?

A contact, I've used in the past for help with Winsuite is: [email protected] Michael Roberts. He works for Technical Support with Winsuite. He helped me solve a problem I was having with the desktop manager. He is very knowledgable and should be able to point you in the right direction.

 

I've not heard of Policy Manager, it may be we're using different versions of Winsuite.

Where would the login script be if it is done that way?

 

I have been on the SYSVOL of the server and there is nothing that points to printers in there!!!

 

Version of winsuite is 4.50.0.1091

Is there a GPO set up for printing? If you open Group Policy Management and check in there for any group policy objects which control printers. It will also show you which computers is applies to, by which OU it's attached to.

I dont seem to fing any GPO setup either, that is exactly what is baffling me!!!

It could well be the case that scripts were run on the original image and that the printer information is being picked up from the registry (on the local machine).

 

Try searching the registry with part or all of the printer name. If you need to remove these printers, there's a useful tool within the 2003 Server Resource Kit.

I'm trying to remote into the Server that we have WInsuite installed on, in one of my schools, to see where the printer settings are on Winsuite software but I can't remote in for some reason, works fine until the one time you need it !!

Nope, I can't get in, but I am visiting that school later on today, around 5pm, I'll have a look through the Winsuite settings and see if I can find where the printers can be controlled from and I'll let you know.

 

It is a really strange one, given the lack of scripts or GPO settings for mapping printers, I'd say it's got to be somewhere in Winsuite.

I've had a look and can't find anything about printers in the Administrator Console. I also can't find anything to do with Policy Manager.

 

Try Emailing the contact address I gave you. he's good, it's free of cahrge obvisouly because it's product support, and he gives you work arounds for things, stuff that isn't generaly known
