glennda Posted September 30, 2009 Posted September 30, 2009 (edited) if you have a APC UPS with an expansion module spare you can get a UPS Environmental Monitoring SmartSlot Card Edit: having looked at your links the expansion card is slightly more expensive, but say if your air con went and the room gets to hot the card will send out the signal to shut down the machines, just like when the power goes Edited September 30, 2009 by glennda
webman Posted September 30, 2009 Posted September 30, 2009 One on of the linux boxes I have a script that watches the internal case/HD temperature and alerts me if it goes too high. Not too expensive either
GrumbleDook Posted September 30, 2009 Author Posted September 30, 2009 This needs to be a stand alone unit which is not connected to any devices such as UPSen or a computer ... it is purely for monitoring over a period of time to allow for some auditing of requirements.

GrumbleDook Posted September 30, 2009 Author Posted September 30, 2009 Ok ... the stand alone device records the temperature ... logged at specified intervals ... and then can be attached to a computer (via USB) when required to download the data ... but will not remain permanently connected to a computer or other device such as UPS.

The recording time and sample rate can be easily selected from the software and, unlike most low cost loggers, the ThermaData logger will continue recording during and after downloading the data. By selecting continuous logging it is possible to start the ThermaData logger only once and never have to reset its parameters again, even if downloaded regularly. Plenty of USB thermometers about, and analogue to digital logging boxes for PCs . I think you want something that can be independent of a pc (have memory for historic logging) and then downloaded as needed. mac_shinobi Posted September 30, 2009 Posted September 30, 2009 (edited) quick google found this EL-USB-2 Data Logger | TomsGadgets usb temp logger - Google Search usb memory stick type device that can log up to 16000 give or take a bit and can log every so often - configuration / setup is done through pc and downloading of data is done through usb port on a computer other then that it can be disconnected from the pc.
