SpuffMonkey Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 Um - one of my servers has disappeared off my browse lists. I can ping it by name and number - all the software on it still works, my documents area is on it and IU can access that OK, it just doesn't show up in a list when you look - which is a bit irritating - especially when trying to change things in Backup Exec (and yes I know I could type in the selections). Any ideas on how to make it reappear would be very gratefully received. Cheers
SpuffMonkey Posted September 6, 2006 Author Posted September 6, 2006 reboot it? Alas, already done this - but no joy. Checked DNS - but that looks OK (from my little knowledge). Any other ideas??
wesleyw Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 I remeber there is a command somewhere to hide a windows server from the network browse options which would cause the symptoms you describe I'll have to look it up though! Wes
wesleyw Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 Okay the command would be: net config server /hidden:yes to hide so I should think net config server /hidden:no will bring it back? The registry entry would be: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ System\ CurrentControlSet\ Services\ LanManServer\ Parameters\ Hidden 0 or 1, and then reboot.
SpuffMonkey Posted September 7, 2006 Author Posted September 7, 2006 Well cheers Wesley - after doing that - it was back - which is puzzling, as I'd already run net config server to check whether it was hidden - and it reported "No". Though I didn't actually try to reset it - though I did find some errors in the WINS stuff which I corrected. Hey ho - thanks a million guys - you're diamonds.
john Posted September 9, 2006 Posted September 9, 2006 Well you learn something new everyday, I ain't come across that before! (goes and hides back in a corner in embarassment as you all laugh at me not knowing that)
Geoff Posted September 10, 2006 Posted September 10, 2006 I did find some errors in the WINS stuff You only need WINS for 9x/NT4 clients. If you don't have any of those left you can safely remove WINS from your servers. 2k/2k3/XP use DNS exlusively.

I thought you still needed WINS to populate a browse list - certainly BackUp Exec didn't like not having WINS running???
GrumbleDook Posted September 10, 2006 Posted September 10, 2006 Sophos used to get a bit grumbly about the lack of WINS too (or it did 2 years ago when I last used it ... and there are never any advances in IT ...erm .. IGMC)
Geoff Posted September 11, 2006 Posted September 11, 2006 I thought you still needed WINS to populate a browse list - certainly BackUp Exec didn't like not having WINS running??? Nope. Browse list will work quite happily without it.
