Offline files problems after server rebuild

Recommended Posts

I installed a new server over the summer and rebuilt the old on that held all the users shares. Now I've moved the staff over to the new one but their laptops and offline files are all referencing the server they used to be on.

Any ideas what I can do to solve this? I thought about creating junction points on the old server pointing to the new one for them all.

Best thing is to blitz the laptops and then when you re-build them, set up the offline files to the new position.

You can call it an urgent security update or something if you are struggling to get them in ;)

could you create a DNS alias to point the old server to the new one

Its a little more involved than creating an alias you also have to set somewhere in the registry that the new server accepts connections with the old servers name. I have done it myself though and it works fine.

You need to reinitialise the offline files cache.

This is done on the offline files tab within folder options. You hold down SHIFT and CTRL and then click on delete.

Be warned there is no method of recovery!! Make sure there are no un-synchronised files in the cache.

Hope this helps

The server they used to sync with has been rebuilt and now exists with the same name so aliasing to the new server name ain't going to be possible.

Plus they will have un synced files as they will be coming back in after the summer.

I suppose I can get the laptops in copy all the unscynced files to a temp folder and then reinitialise the cache but was hoping not to have to do that.
