garethEds Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 This WDS has me pulling my hair out. I'm pre-staging a machine and telling it to connect to my build server only - there are around 5 on the LEA domain. So I point it at: ygg-wds.school.education.swansea.sch.uk which is the DNS name. I click Next and get: Server Object Not Found The server cannot be found on the network because the server is not a Remote Installation server, the server is not on the network or you are experiencing network problems. Do you still want to use the server name? Yes | No Well sorry mr domain - the server is on the network and no we are not experiencing network problems. Everything is done as it should be. Any help appreciated, I've Googled and not much arrived. GJE
sparkeh Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 Hmm, you have got the WDS server set to accept requests? 1
tmcd35 Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 have you tried using the IP address rather than the DNS name?
garethEds Posted September 25, 2009 Author Posted September 25, 2009 Hmm, you have got the WDS server set to accept requests? Respond to all (known and unknown) GJE
garethEds Posted September 25, 2009 Author Posted September 25, 2009 have you tried using the IP address rather than the DNS name? Going to try that now... Nah didn't work. When I click search it comes up with our WDS server listed (along with 5 others). I won't be able to connect to the others due to the LEA firewalls. I've taken the server down today and rebuilt it totally (installation wise). GJE
sparkeh Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 Can your machines resolve the name of the build server? ie nslookup 1
garethEds Posted September 25, 2009 Author Posted September 25, 2009 Can your machines resolve the name of the build server? ie nslookup Yes it can. GJE
DMcCoy Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 Is that from the GUI? What does wdsutil say when you try?
garethEds Posted September 25, 2009 Author Posted September 25, 2009 Is that from the GUI? What does wdsutil say when you try? A noobie question here - but yes that is from the GIU - how would I enter wdsutil when booting the machine to deploy to? GJE
DMcCoy Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 wdsutil is for prestaging and altering machines in AD from the command line (amongst other wds things). Assuming the older format is similar wdsutil /Add-Device /Device:S0101 /ID:001CC0693475 /ReferralServer:10.0.8.1 /WdsClientUnattend:WdsClientUnattend\Student.xml /User:DOMAIN\WDS /JoinRights:Full /JoinDomain:Yes /OU:"OU=S01,OU=Students,OU=Computers,OU=domain,DC=name,DC=school" Edit. wdsutil.exe is on the WDS server 1
sparkeh Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 Oh what dhcp options have you set? Off the top of my head I think option 66 should be set and pointing to WDS server, option 67 should point to the boot image (I think, been a long time since I used WDS, I moved to FOG)).
garethEds Posted September 25, 2009 Author Posted September 25, 2009 Oh what dhcp options have you set? Off the top of my head I think option 66 should be set and pointing to WDS server, option 67 should point to the boot image (I think, been a long time since I used WDS, I moved to FOG)). Hi Sparkeh The DHCP is on another server so the options on the WDS server are turned off. As for on the DHCP machine 66 is set to: 10.180.8.5 67 is pointing to the pxe boot image I'm wonderinf if 66 should be set to ygg-wds instead of an IP address. It worked for RIS as an IP address so I never changed it. I know it is seeing the wds server because it offers me the choice to capture an image or deploy an image. We reach the Vista style screens and I'm asked to authenticate - which works. Then I get told no image available. So I'm assuming this is because I cannot get the machines to see the ygg-wds server when I prestage them. GJE
sparkeh Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 Oh right sorry I am with you now. The clients are pxe booting and contacting the wds server but when it comes to contact the installation server specified during the pre-staging it fails. Is that where we are at? Have you used a FQDN for the installation server during prestaging? I think it is fussy about this. edit: sorry I see from your first post that you have.

We can browse for a Remote Installation server and it gives me the choice of 5 (4 in other schools). But then when I click APply or Ok I am told the server is not there (see error message in first post). I think so - we enter: ygg-wds.school.education.swansea.sch.uk GJE
sparkeh Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 Sorry another clarification question. Are you saying that the installation server is hosted by your LA, offsite?
garethEds Posted September 25, 2009 Author Posted September 25, 2009 Sorry another clarification question. Are you saying that the installation server is hosted by your LA, offsite? No - our WDS server is onsite as is our DHCP. GJE
sparkeh Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 Sorry for the questions I am just trying to understand the setup I am confused by this bit: We can browse for a Remote Installation server and it gives me the choice of 5 (4 in other schools) Why do you have the choice of 5 servers? You are only running 1 WDS server right?
garethEds Posted September 25, 2009 Author Posted September 25, 2009 Sorry for the questions I am just trying to understand the setup I am confused by this bit: Why do you have the choice of 5 servers? You are only running 1 WDS server right? Because the LEA runs a large domain and so when we browse for WDS/RIS servers we can see those in other schools (that seems to be working). We cannot connect to any of them due to the firewall rules put in place by the LEA. Every school has it's own OU and can manage it's own OU. GJE
garethEds Posted September 28, 2009 Author Posted September 28, 2009 Here's a weird one. I've changed the boot option in WDS to show: boot\x86\wdsnbp.com When the Celeron machine boots up it is reporing as a 64 bit machine. This is a celeron!!! No wonder there are no images being shown. Why would an image captured on a 32bit Celeron be reporting as a 64 bit machine? Am I correct in assuming wdnsbp.com looks at the machine and loads accordingly the correct boot image? GJE

jsnetman Posted September 28, 2009 Posted September 28, 2009 I had this problem a while ago, we had to disable architecture discovery, search on google for disabling it.
garethEds Posted September 28, 2009 Author Posted September 28, 2009 What OS disk did you use to create the capture image? I extracted a capture boot image from Windows Vista PE (x86) GJE
