Does anyone know of a remote assistance program that you can host on your own server and allow clients ot ask for help a bit like iTalc combined with Remote Desktop ask for assistance?????

I've just started at a new school who are using NetSupport School Pro in their ICT Suite (and a couple of other machines dotted around the school) which, ok, is a teaching aid, but also can be set up for help requests and the like if you configure the client to do do.

It's good for getting those screen shots of when someone pulls up a lists of proxy servers to get round (or try) the LEA System.

Another thought (similar to that posted by powdarrmonkey) is to use UltraVNC as they have this customisable little thing that you could simply deploy to all desktops and the user clicks it and so long as you're machine is set to listen in for the right packets, you should be able to take control of their screen.

The only issue here is that you have to be listening in, where as my previous (NetSupport) there is a help thing built in and you get a little icon that appears on your view of the machines so you can see what their help request is and chat to them about it in a chat windows too (useful if your school doesn't have a phone by each computer).

I assumed you were talking about support family in other places or something, sorry. If you're on the same network, give them a link to the request remote assistance thingy in Windows Help and they either use Messenger, if you have it, or an email, to open a session with you.

re-reading they could be on about that, but I'm just in "school technician mode" lol ..

If so, the TinyApps and UltraVNC is the best option (I've used the later often to support my sister when she was at Uni and confused by how to do something).

I've had problems with VNC working at an acceptable speed before now internally and externally no reason I could find for it's behaviour either. Anyone know of a really fast remote assistance protocol?
