neon Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 hello, I have a problem with a smartboard in one of my classrooms, the teacher comes to me and says one minute it works and the next it doesn't... I unplugged it and plugged it back in the light goes green... everybodys happy, then it just stops being interactive to the finger.... you can still use the pens... and orient it but thats it... thought the best thing to do was re-install it, however the install falls down with the following error: 1608: Unable to create installdriver instance, Return code: -2147221164 Just wondered if anyone had had any problems like this or could point me in the right direction for sorting it out? Thank you.

Smartboards don't like going through a passive (i.e. non-powered) USB hub. Must either be a mains powered USB hub or built in USB port on the PC to drive the smartboard correctly. You'll find that all will appear fine until you try and interact with the smartboard if a non-powered port is used. The error you're experiencing is an Installshield error. Go into Program files\common files\installshield and delete the drivers folder - reboot the PC and try again. If that fails try deleting everything in the above folder (You may need to remove references in the registry to installshield as well)- reboot and try again. I have tried both these methods with installs that have shown this error and it's fixed them. Installshield is a pain for this with different installs, installing different versions of the installshiel scripting engine. Hope this helps. Edited September 17, 2009 by seanmh 1
neon Posted September 17, 2009 Author Posted September 17, 2009 Thank you, I will go away and try it, the usb is built into the laptop and has been working fine for months, dont know why it has gone like this all of a sudden... Ill try what you suggest though.
