featured_spectre Posted September 16, 2009 Posted September 16, 2009 If any of you are having troubles with the staff/kids getting to places that they shouldnt be (Control panel for staff etc) then use this utility Start Killer. Its completely free for use in any environment (not bound by GNU/GPL etc, its completely freeware). We use this, as it removes the start button facility, so that they have only the quick launch icons and the icons on the desktop. We also removed the right click facility on the machines so they have what we give them. SMT have decided that it was a good idea, and I thought you guys may like it also. We found that doing this reduced our call out incidents by 40% so it was obviously a good thing for us! Hope you can get some use out of it too.
kmount Posted September 16, 2009 Posted September 16, 2009 Nice idea but Though the Start Button is removed, you can still open Start Menu using CTRL+ESC or WIN key. StartKiller place icon into system tray. Right-click on icon to close StartKiller or to open Settings dialog. You can remove icon from system tray. In this case use CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+F12 to open settings dialog box.
featured_spectre Posted September 16, 2009 Author Posted September 16, 2009 (edited) remove the icon, and the staff/kids wont know that key combination will they? Also on Windows 7 (if you are using it yet) it completely disables the Windows Key and CTRL+ESC key combination Edited September 16, 2009 by featured_spectre
ICTSM Posted September 16, 2009 Posted September 16, 2009 remove the icon, and the staff/kids wont know that key combination will they? Also on Windows 7 (if you are using it yet) it completely disables the Windows Key and CTRL+ESC key combination They will now! LOL
featured_spectre Posted September 16, 2009 Author Posted September 16, 2009 you know you can rebind the keys on windows, so just rebind the key to something like ALT or CTRL

Damn, that scuppers our entire distribution... remove the icon, and the staff/kids wont know that key combination will they? Also on Windows 7 (if you are using it yet) it completely disables the Windows Key and CTRL+ESC key combination Security by obscurity. Meet the cluestick.
SpuffMonkey Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 We found this to be quite a useful and fairly cheap bit of kit Easily Block MSN Messenger using TerminatorX - avoid having to block MSN ports Not used so much now, as we have better ways to do it - but still handy
