Hi,

Does anybody else have this problem, this happens on most of our Networked machines, when we got to shutdown or restart a Windows XP Machines, the computer goes to shutdown but sits for quite some time on just a blue screen, like the color you get on the Windows Logon Screen with a mouse cursor showing, not the hour glass. Eventually the machine does Shutdown or Restart, but does anybody know what it might be trying to do whilst it's sitting on this screen, sometimes it takes forever.

Any pointers would be great, I've looked in Event Viewer but can't find anything obvious.

Thanks

I have the same exact behavior over several different machine types. We have had several theories over the past year and none have panned out. We installed UPH clean but it didn't solve our problem. Online research doesn't seem to turn up much in the way of ideas. I am interested to hear that other people are having this kind of problem.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies so far... again this happens on several types of machine setups, not of the same "breed" Happens on new machines with the very latest drivers installed.

Yes we have the UHC Tool on the classroom machines, but not on all the machines that the problem happens on.

When the machines were standalone I don't think this problem happened, so seems to point to something maybe network related...

Thanks

If you take them off domain (as in workgroup mode) do they take as long?

A few quick things to try, disable hibernate and also check to make sure all the ACPI features are turned on properly in the bios. What model is the pc or is it not model specific?

Also how did you build your O/S's? RIS/GHOST?

I "think" I may have found the problem, just need to check it out on a few more machines to see if shutdowns have improved... Looking at our "Default Domain Policy" we have a setting in place to "Clear virtual memory pagefile" on shutdown... I think this is what was causing the slow shutdowns/restarts.

Will keep you posted.

Yep that will do it :)

I am curious about this question. We use GHOST to build our machines. Is there something we should be looking out for that may cause slow logon or logoff?

Nah not really, sometimes things that are set in a RIS'ed image could somehow lock (aka gp settings) and they would not be overriden by GP.

It was more a diagnosis question, for example if it was bootcd/wininstall deployed that possibility is eliminated as they do scripted fresh installs everytime.

Btw you should check out SCCM, its very very good for deployment as I am just getting us setup here with it now using XP.

one way to check slow logon/logoff is to wire the pc through a hub (what ppl had before switches!) and then use a laptop with wireshark also connected to the hub to sniff the packets off the pc, see what it's doing or trying to do. this works because hubs don't segment traffic.
