Acer ASPIRE 5920 (URGENT - if this is not fixed I'm a dead female tecky

Hi, I knw this place is not for work but as ithis is personal it doesn't fit into any other catergory, so here goes.

 

I have a ACER ASPIRE 5920 laptop which one of the teachers asked meto take a look at as it was sloow. I managed to speed up the laptop but now it constantly BLUE SCREENS with memory dump information, which tell me i need to remove the antivirus, and firewall.

 

The only problem is after its createda memory dump it switches off and starts again doing the same thing.

 

I need to fix this and fast I have till monday,can anyone help me or give me some advice as to how I can fix this.

 

I am getting deperate now to any help will be appreciated.

Can you not get in to it in safe mode?

Agreed. Safe mode and system restore, followed by a dammed good security sweep would be my first actions (well, after using Ccleaner to get things a bit less clagged).

I've tried that, there doesnt seem to be a restore image on the laptop. So wot now?

Two things:

1. Since you can get into safe mode, this might help you get started on the diagnostics: Disable automatic reboot after Crash (Blue Screen)

Standard how-to-fix-a-computer procedure: get all the user's file off the machine (either copy them on to a plugin drive, on to a network drive, or take the harddrive out and plug it in to an external caddy if the machine is really knackered, as yours sounds as it is) then wipe the harddisk and reinstall Windows. This is probably still your best bet. One other thing to check might be the PCMCIA slot - I've seen a couple of laptops where a plugged-in USB or network card caused the machine to reset due to driver problems / power drain.

I'd flatten it as per dhicks advice but if it wasn't doing it when you got it, what have you done to speed it up etc and maybe this'll help point us in the right direction.

 

Important though to do what AngryTechnician suggested to see if you can get a decent error out of it.

try restoring to a date before you installed the external screen

in safe mode...

 

start--all programs – accessories – system tools – system restore and follow the wizard.

No data is lost (except any program you installed after the chosen restore date)

Take all the data off it and flatten it.... much easier way to sort it.... it WILL be quicker and WILL NOT have any viruses (for obvo reasons).

 

Also we point blank refuse to look at personal machines for this very reason... if you can't fix it they will get pissy... and it's not really your job (we make recommendations or provide software for them but thats it)

if its 'Blue screening' could be

- hardware fault (laptops left on sofas,beds tend to over heat and make the RAM duff)

- driver problem if you can get into safe mode withou 'blue screening' its probably a driver problem or service - run MSCONFIG and disable all non microsoft services and untick all the startyup programs and restart then if works, then one-by-one re-enable services/startup porgrams and see which one if duff/corrupt.

 

remember -

1 backup user data (documents/email) BEFORE you start any changing of the computer

2 are you insured against unreasonable customers or did they sign a non-disclamer?)

I seem to recall ALT-F10 being the key combo to restore my Acer 5920 from the hidden restore partition or something similar anyway.

 

(That was before I trashed my partition table and ended up wiping it clean!)

every time i have seen this its been downloaded onto the computer with the annoying popup of scan your computer now,

if i was you id check you had proper antivirus and firewall on it, i don't think that the blue screen asking you to disable anti-viurs, last year my girlfriends laptop use to come up with that annoying blue screen and restart all the time i found out it was that "free virus scan" just have a check to see what anti-viurs it is worth a shot ay.
