Just a word of warning more than anything, RM have their new RM Ones Clicky

Looks great BUT, as is in the spec (not seen by the NM) they have an integrated webcam, ok you may say, dont in stall software for it. Shame the bloody builds throw the software when its probably not in the build.

What to do, using the security screw driver, yes i said Screwdriver (no bloody allen keys) and remove the "carry handle", two screws and remove the usb for the webcam.

Done 30, only another 20 to do. Why could they not give us the option.

If yoou leave it in, the kids can take pictures of themselves, when another student logs in, they get the pictures taken by the other students! Good huh!

Maybe instead of throwing out such a useful educational resource to use is there a way around the problem. Could you using reg frag redirect where it stores the videos/pics to their my documents/home drive.

Can't you simply uninstall the webcam driver from each machine?

I will email someone see if there is way of changing location of the image folder.

Alt maybe a way to stop software running for students only if on cc4/cc3 network.

I did originally think about disabling the device as mentioned, the issue then is if I have to rebuild that computer in the future then I would have to log back on and disable it again.

Russ - the issue we have it is an "educational Resource" yes, but we have students in school who's parents refrain from them having their picture taken and used in various ways. There is also a student who is photo..... (basically doesnt like her photo taken) I dont really want to be in a situation where we have to explain ourselves to parents as to why we have these installed.

Or you could script it?

I would have thought that was to do with pr and publicity. Also to play devils advocate for minute what do you do over digital cameras and students using them..

I understand what saying but think their is better way then uninstalling even if it is just staff have access to it.

Fyi software restrictions are a Windows, not exclusively CCx feature.

Oh yes I did realise this, so I amend my post to "How about you use a software restriction to stop the webcam software running?"

We have webcams on out latest batch of laptops. Originally they defaulted to save on the HDD of the machine, but with a very simple reg hack this was re-directed to the users home area. The security permissions stopped the files being saved anyway, but it wasn't hard to re-direct the default location to somewhere else.

I think webcams are very useful, and with more and more emphasis on multimedia technologies in teaching, and the use of learning platforms for video conferencing etc. it won't be long until we're expected to have them on all PCs.

How do you rebuild a machine - do you have a disk image of each machine? Can't you create a disk image without the webcam driver?

These arrived new and we had to install them in between doing the CC4 rebuilds following the upgrade to the servers over the summer.

At the moment we are far to busy to change the build, create a script etc so 30 minutes of my time was spent removing the usb lead. Thats what the deputy head for that area wanted so I did it.

It may seem wrong to remove them but we didnt want the webcam in the first place.

Our new sixth form laptops have webcams and we've disabled them in the bios, can't imagine any practical use of the webcams up in sixth form, they're just there for students to do work in frees and suchlike. Can always enable again if a use is ever found.... if only there was GPO controlled BIOS's. :p

that's a matter of opinion. :p

Errm, it looks a bit fugly if you ask me. :p At least this one doesn't have the monitor buttons that oh so easily get pushed too far and broken like ours.
