free internet filtering

Having spent almost ALL of my budget on a new ICT suite, I am now left with money for consumables, so does anyone know a good filtering solution for less than £100 or free? (Not squid or Dans Guardian though please!)

each time i entered our IP to register to it, it said it had been taken already, so that was a non starter. If anyone has a solution on which I can stick on a virtual machine or something (other than squid or dans guardian) then I am happy to try!

 

I am getting fed up of ISA to be honest and want something worthwhile.

Don't think you'll get one I'm afraid, I'd have gone with Squid/Dans Guardian.

 

Internet Filtering would be far up my list of priorities, maybe you could use this as leverage with your SLT to procure pennies to buy a Smoothie?

well i am happy to sacrifice my training budget this year to get a smoothie in honesty, but whether the bosses will go for it is a different matter!

Do you currently have approved filtering in place? (If not, there's a pretty punchy argument for you!)

we have ISA server in place, but I dont like it because its attached to the server, if that crashes we have no filtering, but if we have something seperate then its all good.

 

As for dansguardian, I have had nothing but problems with it when I used it last so I gave up. I even had alot of tech support from the forums and phone calls etc.

if you've set your isa and network up properly then should be able to get on the internet at all with if the isa server dissappears.

 

 

I've blocked all IP's aparts from the ISA server's ip with the LEA's filtering, doesn't atomwide do half the country?

 

then block things based on windows user groups e.g. student / staff etc.

 

whats the problem with ISA server? to be fair if i didn't have the LEA's filtering as well I probably would use something else.

You will probably find that squid is more stable, Perhaps you could try using the free version of smoothwall or similar, IIRC there is a free plugin for dansguardian that is preconfigured so it may come with less problems if you cannot afford the schoolguardian. Smoothwall is based upon Dansguardian/Squid.

Your problems with your ISA what version is it, and what else is running on it? I dare not say but my I've never had problems with my ISA server and countless others haven't.

 

Are sure its not hardware?

 

Is it VM or on the Metal?

Censornet? It's a squid/dansguardian but in a pre-built fashion. Not sure if it's still a no-go or if its just self-compiled stuff you were referring to. There was mention of v4 being made open source. Not sure if thats happened yet though.

If I can convince the school to give up my training budget to buy a smoothie, then that would be ideal but I am not sure on how well that will run,

I have been running dansguardian for ages and it works a dream but I will admit getting the setting right at the beginning was a pain. I am sure that we can send you a copy of congfig files to get you started to get you over that if you wish.

 

The only requirement you would have would be an old 2.x gig cpu box with a new hard drive and a couple of gig of ram.

 

Smoothwall is the commercial version of the program but costs money.

We have been using IPCop here for the last 5 years and it has held up brilliantly, we could also let you have all the filtering lists to go with it once you have it installed.

 

Ohh BTW it's free apart from the hardware but you don't need anything major apart from 2 Nics and a little memory.

Endian works straight out of box but it only allows you to have 1 group - ie you cant have 1 for staff and a seperate 1 for pupils.

 

Again its dansguardian but you arnt going to find a better tool for the job, hence why every fintering solution worth its salt uses it.
