What do you use for Remote Support?

Okay we have two domains Admin and Curriculum.

 

I choose to use UVNC viewer and SC UVNC server for the Admin network, this means that when we get a phone call they can click a shortcut that silently installs uvnc server then sends a help request to us, it then uninstalls itself afterwards. Simple enough and I'm happy with that.

 

but...

 

What would you use for the Curriculum network is there any easy to deploy packages?

 

I've looked at ITALC and for whatever reason thats not playing ball (will troubleshoot more tomorow but might 'can' it), I'd like something more like UVNC but in a .msi. So I can connect to them or they can easily send a request to me.

TeamViewer looks pretty good. However, I think Remote Assistance may be a better option since it is included in Windows. You can also set it up so that the invitations are permanent i.e. users don't get asked for permission before you connect: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/301527.

You can deploy tight VNC by group policy. to all your machines.

When the order gets put through we/i will also have ABTutor so i can remote on any machine.

Yup, I use RDC or RA subject to whether I need to see the user demonstrate a problem. If you're on Vista onwards the RA client can be pointed at an IP address e.g. msra /offerra 10.9.8.7, which is easier than it used to be.

But why would you run two remote apps on a workstation when the MS one does both those jobs?

For the curriculum network I spent some money (around £1000) for ABTutor. More than worth it. Tried both NetOp and iTALC in the past, ABTutor is a far better, more stable and easier to use product.

 

For the admin network (needs re setting up) I go with UltraVNC (with the graphics mirror driver). It's (should be) password protected and they (should) have to hit the 'accept' when we make a connection.

Vnc connection is encrypted plus uses active directory auth. Ots also quicker to take control of a machine

 

remote desktop is built in windows????

We use VNCon as the master control with tightvnc client and it works very well for us as we can give out a slimmed down version of the master control to the teachers which only picks up the workstations within that ICT suite and no more, so no security issues.

ABTutor for curriculum machines (ie. what teachers use), and VNC (with VNCScan for use as the admin tool) for everything else.

You could get VNC Enterprise Edition, this has a deployment tool - very good, I tested it at my last school but didnt get around to placing an order.

We use TightVNC here for our remote support tasks within school and Logmein for access to the servers outside of school.

 

I also use Teamviewer if I am kind enough to fix / laugh at teacher problems to logon to their home PC's or laptops on a night or weekend.
