Rename My Computer Via Registry

Hi,

 

I am following this to rename my computer. We used this method - Rename My Computer on Desktop - in Windows Vista, XP & 2000 and it worked fine.

 

In 7 when i press ok i get the attached.

 

Does anyone know how to override this?

You just need to grant yourself permission to that registry key first - you'll need to take ownership first, then add yourself as having full control and it works fine. Just tested it on my laptop.

I never thought of permissions. I would have though access denied to be a better error message.

Yes it will be like most things on Windows Vista/7 you will need to make sure you have permissions. Can you Run the script as an Administrator? (Right Click > Run as Admin)

So the user can identify the computer name easier.

maps of rooms and a record of where each pc, it's name etc are very handy, completely takes this issue out of their hands... as long as they can count and know which room they are in!

Then there is the office machine, library, laptops, offsite machines

How do you deal with offsite machines anyway?

 

I was thinking more along the lines of a central (ie: you have it) map etc.. we started to build one here over the summer and it's quite handy.. not that we've used it yet

 

As for laptops, they're individually named to a convention here (based on the owner) so as long as I know who I'm talking to, I can guess the name.

 

Just an idea though, I doubt there's a be-all and end-all solution to anything in a school...

oh right as in the name of the computer, not My Computer? i thought you was trying to rename "computer" back to "my computer" like in the XP days.

Not many offsite machine. We have a collection of loan laptops labeled 1 - 30 so we cant keep renaming them. We have always used this method so gona stick to it, staff know how to identify the computer name.
