Took delivery of a lapcabby the other day. Was suprised to find (only because i hadnt thought about it before) it came with two keys. No way are we going to keep 2 keys safe.

I suggested to my Line Manager we have the one out for staff on a HUGE keyring and he suggested not locking it at all which i said was pointless then, we may as well have not bothered to get a trolley.

So, is it possble to get more keys for the thing or what? They are the round shaped ones so i doubt you can get a copy unless im mistaken...

If they're the locks I'm thinking of then they're called Tubular cylinder locks and you can get them cut but it's a specialist job. If you know where to go, you can get any sort of key cut you need to.

I've used these guys once before to duplicate master keys for a lock system where the manufacturer no longer exists, and they did it for me with no hassle (kinda worrying, but at the same time quality service) They may well be able to do the Tubular type locks as well.

There is a company called Dalen Top-Tec near my school (Kitts Green). I use them for all my security needs. If you can provide them with the TT numbers from the cases of the cabinets then they will supply the keys, it does however depend on what make the cab is but its well worth getting them to check. They arn't very expensive, if memory serves correct they are £12 per key.

You could email them at [email protected].

We had a similar problem, where by we wanted to lend keys to each member of a department, we contacted our supplier (dabs) and they contacted monarch (lapcabbys creator) and got some spare keys from them, so it is possible.

We have only two keys here, one stay locked in the finance office safe (and the bursar will only release it to me or the HT) and the other is on a keyring in the staffroom during the day and locked away in my keysafe at night.

I've got class-room booking system taking care of who has them out, so if the key goes missing I can track down the person with it.

IMHO having more keys decreases security. How long will it be before a teacher loses it and things "It's ok, there are four more around the school, I'll just keep quiet"

I've just been in contact with Dalen Top-Tec because i need some keys as well. The cost is £12 + VAT for 1 set of keys. You get 2 keys with 1 set.
