Hi

I have a problem with one of the computers. When I load up CMIS and goto 'file' to select the path to the correct file the file name is often not there. Also, when going to open it it often resets itself to go back to 'My Computer' rather than the area of the network where it is contained. It's obviously possible for the person to find the relevant file from 'My Computer' but she is starting to find it frustrating, especially as she know she should just be able to go to file and then click it. I'm sure this has a really obvious answer, but does anyone know how to change the settings so it saves the pathway in the file drop down box?

Thanks a lot

Yes that'd right. It's located in the same area as all our other CMIS files. I'm sure there's a way that you can set up CMIS so that it automatically opens it up rather that us having to select the file manually. I just can't think what it is right now!

Thats an odd one. Although we always have to open the file here, the local machine always remembers where it is located. You could check the folder where the file is and make sure it is in a shared folder/subfolder. Other than that it might be worth getting in contact with Link2ICT because if CMIS is tampered with in any way they can get a bit narked and charge you for fixing it.

The computer that it's on is apparently having other problems as well so I don't know if that may be the cause of it.

The last place I worked in had it so that the login box loaded up automatically so now my heads going crazy trying to figure it out because I know it's possible. I'm waiting on a call back from Link2ICT as our teacher timetables aren't loading properly on ePortal so I'll try and sneak the question in there at the same time.:)

SpuffMonkey: I'll give that a check when I can get on her computer

AMC: Thanks anyway, I'm sure I'll figure it out somewhere down the line. It's just one of those things that's going to bug me for ages:rolleyes:

The recently openned files list on the file menu is stored in c:\windows\cmisadmin.ini.

If the user cannot read or write to that file it wont be populated. You can edit that file in notepad if you wish to change it.

To force it to open a cdb (connection to database) file directly, you need to place a space in the target and then the location of the cdb, e.g.

\\server1\Facilityadmin\admin.exe h:\clientfiles\cmislive.cdb

The startin path should always point at the users client files and the client files should be user specific, not shared.

Sorry to be a miserable person here, but that wasn't the advice of about 4 years ago, all our users (bar me and 1 other as i'm from a different camp of Serco as it were) were setup to share one set :( Another job that needs sorting, move all Fac. Admin users to there own set of client files.

and thanks for the cbd tip never knew that one myself :)

I can't comment as of 4 years ago, because i've been at Serco for 3.

I know it is sometimes advisable to do that, but only when schools absolutely demand that they want to force settings upon people.

I can give you a list of reasons not to share them now, such as, the cdb file stored the active dataset - so if you share cdb with your timetabler and they save the file in the new dataset, next time you login you're in the wrong dataset - people don't always notice, etc etc.

The backup location / restore location is stored in here also.

All the column definitions (hide / visible, orders, etc) are stored in ini files in the startin location. If you're sharing these people will have to configure this every time they use it, etc.

Standard installs these days, and atleast for the last 3 years are one install on the server, a shortcut to every user, every user has their own client files. Usually in their home folder on the network, for ease of use.
