RESOLVED: Server 2008/Exch 2007 domainname\username annoyance

Hi

 

Just had a question about server 2008 and exchange 2007 login changes.

 

I believe security has been beefed up in windows 2008 but is there anyway when logging onto a windows vista/7 workstation, rather than typing in domainname\username, can it be just username or for me to set a gpo or something to automatically fill the domain name?

 

Same goes with exchange 2007, when logging onto OWA users have to type in domainname\username to login to their email. It would be ideal if users can just type their username or it automatically parses the domain name when a user logs in.

 

Any suggestions?

Exchange Management Console > Server Config > Client Access > OWA > Properties > Authentication

 

Under Forms-based Auth, select Username only, add in your domain... press ok out and viola...

 

You may need to reboot IIS for the change to take effect, can't remember.

Yup the above is correct that is how you would configure it, unless ofcourse you are going through an ISA Server in which case you would keep integrated authentication on your exchange box and configure the listener to sort out the forms based authentication so you only have to type in USERNAME

 

Keep in mind though, if you have this configured internally if the computer does not log the user into the service (it should do) but some users like to use FF etc they will have to type in DOMAIN\USERNAME you basically can have it one way or another

 

Preferably you would ofcourse prefer it to be how you want, as generally internally it should log them in automatically using SSO

This was some useful information concerning Exchange, as we will be moving to that next year.

 

However, is there an answer for the Windows Vista/7 domain user name question? Filling in the domain name will be a big issue for most of our staff and we would like to keep it simple for when we do eventually move to Vista/7.

You don't need to put the domain name in as long as you are logging onto the domain that the computer is a member of.

Thanks, I'll look into this when I get the chance. I only briefly worked with Vista on the Server 2003 network at my last school and never had the chance to really figure things out. I look forward to learning all the new changes Server 2008 and Vista/7 brings.
