Can the Vanilla 2003 (not R2) Active Directory Scheme be extended

Hi all,

We have successfully integrated 15 MacBooks running Leopard into our 2003 AD. Clients can connect to the Internet, map their home drive and print. However I would like to be able to, control printing centrally, lock down the stations and map a public share at login. All tasks that could be undertaken using Workgroup Manager and an extended schema. I have read the white papers and watched the videos however we have one sticking point - we are using Windows 2003 not 2003 R2. Can I extend this schema and have it work or is there another way of using Workgroup Manager that doesn't involve the AD at all or an OSX server.

Nope your going to need a mac server im afraid.

Hi, yes you are going to need a mac server to do what you want, although you don't need to go to the expense of an xserve. Get a mac mini and a copy of OS X server and if you can manage it a copy of Apple Remote Desktop also. You then will be able to restrict the users access, map group shares, remote control macs, specify proxies and update server etc... from the OS X server while still using AD for authentication so you don't have to recreate your users.

FTR, any version of active directory can have its schema extended or altered (that's the point, after all), but it doesn't solve your problem.
