Is it possible to break your big toe, but for the effects not to kick in for a couple of days?

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday were fine, went for multiple mile walks etc each day no worries. Then wednesday night, I noticed a slight pain in my left big toe.

Overnight it was aching, and thursday morning it was swollen to 2x the size. Today it is all red and I could hardly walk. Ibuprofen didnt really make a diference, (neither did 6 beers, half a bottle of wine, and a double whisky)

I can move it up and down, but cant really bend it in the middle.

The wieredest thing is, I havent done anything like stub my toe, or kick anything, that could have caused it.

Someone I know broke his toe or maybe foot, but he didn't realise untill a few days later and when he went to the hospital they asked him if he had done anything new/different such as sport, he was a very sporty person, and the only new 'thing' he had done was get a job and was running up and down the esscelators on the london tube, turns out it was that which had done it.

Maybe it's a dislocation - may take a couple of days for the fluid inside to build up enough to make a difference. As the previous poster mentions, it doesn't take much.

Better get it checked out - you've probably already done that by now I guess.

@RabbieBurns:

Sounds like gout to me and if you are drinking copious amounts of alcohol as which you have stated then it could point to this.

Unless you have done something you know which could have broken your toe?

P.S. Gout is very painful but treatable with certain medication. ;) :)

Ah yes gout - I had that once, very painful - though I had not been drinking copious amounts I hasten to add. I think I got something from the Doc's for it.

My first guess would be gout, too. I've had it twice in my life. Both times it was in the big toe, and both times after larger-than-normal quantities (whilst on holiday back in NZ) of the following:

Red Wine, Port, Cheese, Fish and Shellfish (in my case it was whitebait), and Whisky.

It could quite well have been gout. It seems to have completely cleared up by itself.

This is what it looked like
