Just want to have a general thumbs up for CPL and moan about a couple of other things

 

Thanks to Simon at CPL for helping me the past couple of days. Orders should be with you soon bud.

 

Got 4 Toshiba Laptops from him, arrived yesterday. Took us ages to find a sub £500 laptop that supported Hardware Virtualisation and 8Gb Ram. The Toshiba L300D series pretty much does the job. 3Gb £300 inc. cach-back . It's annoying Intel processors, atleast at this price point, do not include VT. Indeed if you can find one it's like picking hen's teeth!

 

At to stick with AMD to guarrantee VT support. How meny manufacturers can you count currently suppling AMD laptops, the numbers fewer than you might think, Grrr.

 

Now for the moan...

 

After all that hard work, 64bit Win 7 BSOD's on install! Some hardware compatibility issue. Vista 64bit installs fine. Win 7 32bit installs fine. Win 7 64bit BSOD. Even trying to install Vista 64 then in place upgrade to Win 7 gets a BSOD. Grrr. After all that hard work finding the laptop i can't run the OS on it. Looks like it's Vista 64 until Toshiba release a BIOS update, or some driver fix allows an upgrade install from Vista

 

Back to the good...

 

Just want to have a shout out to David Wiseman at Wisesoft. The guy is an AD genius. Just imported 160 Year 7 students in to AD with user accounts fully set up, including home drive permissions, etc, in under 2 minutes

what was the bsod error you were getting ?

 

Can't you use the drivers for vista 64 bit on windows 7 64 bit ?

It BSOD's straight after the Win 7 loading logo/screen. You don't get anywhere near the first set up screen. This is way before you have a chance at loading drivers. I thought installing Vista 64 with all the latest drivers and then in place upgrading would work, but got the exact same problem.

 

It's a hardware issue and in all likelyhood nothing short of a BIOS update from Tosh will fix it Oh Hum. On the plus side Hardware VT works with Virtual PC 2007 on Vista 64 SP2 - so the laptop does do what I wanted it to do, just not using the OS I wanted to use.

Not sure how or if you could do something similiar to nlite but intergrate the chipset and sata drivers into the windows 7 disc and create a new bootable windows 7 disc with the relevant latest drivers ( most likely the vista 64 bit drivers or the windows 7 ones ) at least to get it booted and installed and then if it does work you can install the windows 7 drivers on it unless you intergrated the windows 7 drivers with the windows 7 setup os disc ( slip streaming I think the word is )

 

Any info on the bsod as to what dll or what the hex code is ?

I too agree with the comment about David Wiseman - in the old days, we used to use the utility provided by microsoft but because we bulk add once a year, we ended up forgetting how to do it, what the utility was called, etc...

 

Since then we started using AD Infinitum, which was okay but no way we were going to pay for it (not my decision I might add) so we ended up using the trial on one of our DCs the first time then next time on another DC for another x days and so on until it got silly (on a negative point, it never really worked properly with our setup.)

 

Zoom in to fairly recently - I decided that I had had enough of this and tried to find a free alternative (something we seem to have not been able to find before) and lo and behold within the first 5 google hits was his Account Management Spreadsheet. 10 Minutes later, and i'd managed to set up and create all required user accounts with no issues.

 

To say the least, I was very impressed.

I wrote a Pascal program that did 90% of the work a few years ago. Every year I'd have to edit the source, which meant deciphering the code I'd written, and re-compile for the new year. Then spend 3 or 4 hours painstakingly going through the permissions on the home folders by hand to get them right.

 

Thanks to his Account Management Spreadsheet I had the whole thing complete in under 5 min this year. Very happy chappy
