No net connection

just had 10 toshiba laptops in started the normal rigger of wiping crap and installing office antivirus and win update suddenly they started loosing net connection , not network just net.

 

i can ping servers internally just not externally, so cant do win update. btw they running *cough* vista

 

any ideas its bugging me and i cant think, prob staring me in the face (out for a friends bday last night so a bit tequila'ed over lol)

proxy server addresses in IE are correct and on correct ports ?

lol yeah forgot to add that i had checked and checked again that the details were correct, seemed to all happen at once (well post reboot on some).

 

un boxed more and they wouldnt do the same. perhaps our network dislikes vista not beyond the realm of belief

Can you get an internet connection on a desktop station?

Are the default gateways / dns addresses the same on both machines?

Try disabling IPV6

i havent manually set the ip or dns on any, just dhcp. may try setting them to test but they are staff laptops to use at home and school so wouldnt help much

 

oh and i have tried dns flush even tho they are brand new.

tried google the updates that were installed? there might a issue with some maybe.

some of the stations wouldnt conect from the box, wen i looked at the rest they had all disconnected too (bar one which was 90% the way thru updates, rebooted and wasnt connected)

Do an ipconfig /all and look at the default gateways. If any of them is set to 0.0.0.0 then you'll get problems. (Is Vista telling you that it can't get network access on the system tray icon?)

 

If this is the problem then there's a good article here How to Disable TCP/IPv6 Teredo Tunneling in Vista My Digital Life telling you how to get rid of all the stuff to do with IPV6 (it's not as simple as just unticking it in the network connection properties!)

ran ipconfig /all didnt see the 0.0.0.0 but i did see lease expires [yday at 11] which is about when i happened (i carried on with other stuff and forgot)

 

ill admit ignorance and say i dont know what this means but will not be lazy and google away

Might be worth trying to reset the winsock stack incase it's having a funny five mins. However if all of your machines 'broke' at the same time I would probably be looking at the DHCP server!

 

On a faulty machine run the following from a CMD prompt:

netsh winsock reset

It will probably want a reboot!

 

Failing that, you could rule out the local machine being at fault by giving one machine a static IP address as a test?

 

Also, what AV are you running?

using sophos on these. although the problem is on blank (just unboxed just vista and tosh software) laptops.
