dead CPU?

Looking at a computer for friend, failed after thunder storm. Computer completely dead, so I checked PSU in another computer thats fine boots up, put known working PSU in dead computer - nothing.

 

Removed ram - still dead.

 

Tested on/off switch with multimeter - working OK

 

When computer is connected to the mains, the LAN port green light is flashing and random lights on at front of case.

 

I've got a PCI testing card thingy that displays a error number at bootup, that remains dead when computer switched on.

 

Is there anything else I can test? Or is it a dead CPU?

Sounds like it could be either the motherboard or CPU, or of course both I'm afraid.

probably motherboard. Despite working with many machines over the years I've not once had a dead CPU. Plenty of motherboards though. I'm guessing it's an AMD one too

Yeah i would agree i would say it is probably only the motherboard, it 'could' of taken the CPU down as well but not always.

 

Cant you test the CPU in another machine that accepts it?

 

depending on spec, maybe get a new Motherboard/CPU/Ram bundle so they get a newish PC instead of just replacing the board.. depending on budget obviously.

more than likely motherboard but i've had dead cpu's before as well.

Had similar a month ago, on closer inspection the PCI modem card (out in the sticks, can't get broadband) had a neat little hole blown in it. Removed the card and then machine fired up fine !
