Ben_Stanton Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Finally getting around to replacing the 6 year old crappy belkin workstation UPS's that are daisy chained and providing half a second of power in a failure to all servers!!!!! I should have done it sooner I know, but the £800 bill from an exchange recovery expert has prompted me (the hazards of rural existance). Looking for a rackmount solution ideally. To serve 6 servers ranging from quad core to single CPUs and a good few hard disks. I am working on juice consumption so can come back with figures if needed. Would like some recomendations really. They would need to be 'intelligent' and know when to shut themselves down in the event of sustained power outage. Thanks in advance, Ben

localzuk Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 I've got 2 APC Racmount 5kVA UPS's - one powers all network related servers (roughly 8 of them) and the other powers the core switch and our phone server - for a long time. I'll get about 10 minutes at most from the server one, and about 2 hours from the other. The servers are a selection of dual chipped, quad core devices, down to dual chipped dual core devices. Both have network cards so can shut down servers safely.

And yes, you install an agent on the servers, and set it all up with your shutdown thresholds. So when the UPS loses power, it tells the servers.
plexer Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 mine powers 7 servers of all sorts. Single, dual & triple redundant psu's using apcupsd. Don't forget switch too.

If you go to the apc website and use the UPS Selector tool you can find out how much run time you'll get for your mix of servers etc. BTW are your existing UPSs really 'daisy chained'? All that does is introduce multiple points of potential failure; you won't get any longer run time.

The 5000 is high capacity but hardwired. Only costs a couple of hundred quid to get a dedicated 16A circuit set up, with 16A plugs etc... (Or, it did for us).

Soulfish Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Just got a 10kva w/10mins uptime UPS (Rotation+ 6kVA - 10kVA Parallel | Borri) from Borri UK. Total cost was about £2,400 but do bare in mind that it needs a dedicated hardwired 50A input feed, and has to have a hardwired output (so you'll need a PDU as well!).

At the moment we've got two storage arrays, 4 servers and a tape changer on it. I'm probably gonna thin it out a bit since we've got a few 1500s knocking about.
