As webman says - think about what you'd like to do at home with your PC (assuming it is a PC) - throw us a list of what you'd like to be able to do and we could recommend a few for you - but ultimately the choice is your own.

It will either be a Dell or a HP - can't forget windows 7 ( that would be sacralidge cant spell that word lol )

I use Ubuntu Linux almost exclusively at home nowadays for my email, web browsing, that sort of thing. I play the odd game on it too. Only reason I still have Windows is to allow me to use Reaper for recording music. I may switch to Ardour eventually, but I like Reaper a lot so unless they port it to Linux I'm sticking with it.

 

So anyway, like others have said, you need to look at what you're using it for. If you just want to be able to use the internet then Ubuntu would be fine. If you want to play windows games, edit videos, record music, that sort of thing, you're best to stick with a version of windows for now. Windows XP Home is pretty good still, I wouldn't go to 7 yet but that's just my opinion. Vista will hurt your sanity don't touch it ;)

 

Of course Mac OS is great for idiots, it makes everything nice and simple for you. It does mean you're trapped in a kind of electronic padded cell though... ;)

as a home os i dont get why people dont like vista i have few problems with it and my pc is on 24/7 as its a media centre

I use my mac for video editing and audio and its better then windows at it imo and as for games if I have windows games I can play them either in a virtual machine or using boot camp on windows if need be.

 

Only down side with the mac is graphics card wise and spec wise I could of gotten better if I had of gone for a HP or Dell or something of the likes but I didn't want to be stuck to just windows and linux ( and illegally faffing with project 86 )

 

Thats all Im saying and take it or leave it and no not starting another flame thread as done that once already

 

Not sure how thats a padded cell electronically but if you want windows and only windows / linux then as above a hp / dell or the likes with ubuntu or w/e OS you want ( excluding vista )

Well personal opinion, if moneys no object, has to be Mac OS (sorry :o ). If you want to stick with Windows than I'd say it's 64bit 7 all the way now with XPM for backwards compatibility.

 

Not having the finances for another mac :( I'm currently choosing between 64bit 7 and Xubuntu myself.

 

Of the Linuxes I personally think the Ubuntu's are the best for no nonsense all round home desktop use. My personal preference being the XFCE based Xubuntu (can't stand KDE and Gnome is a little bloated).

Without wishing to reduce this thread to the age old "OS War" I would say that depending upon what you want to do with your computer plays a part in your OS of choice.

 

Gaming even with Wine/Crossover/Cedega is still not quite there on Linux/other so those people who spend a large portion of their 'time' on gaming would be better served on a Windows OS.

 

I personally don't play games (beyond Literati on Yahoo Games) so I don't need to factor that into my decision which allows me the flexibility to settle quite happily on an OS which suits my needs, Office Style working (OpenOffice), Development (KDevelop), and Web Browsing (Firefox).

 

Each to their own, I'd love to have a Mac as I can imagine Time Machine being an absolute boon to me for the amount of times I want to try something and revert, mind you, Open Solaris with ZFS and time slider is going to be interesting.

 

I run Gentoo (personal) and Ubuntu (work) but am known to run an XP VM on occasion when needed.

I didn't say "just"; I said a large portion and some people prefer PC to console style gaming.

 

I know most people won't appreicate this but you get games on OS X and also if its windows you can use boot camp and boot directly into windows and still play PC style games with a keyboard and mouse :eek: shock - horror

Still, if it was me and I did play games I wouldn't want to close everything else down, and reboot it into a windows environment where I'd still need AV/etc kept up to date.

What I dont get is why did vmware fusion limit you to 2 cpu's when I have 2 quad cores ( 8 cores in total ) couldnt I use one quad core for windows and one for the mac ?

 

and they need to give you more 3D acceleration on a vm so you can just full screen the VM and play a game - would make more sense

 

Not sure where it is but I saw a youtube video on a Mac Pro 2008 with an Nvidia 8800GT where the user had dual screens and was playing a 3D game in a VM

A Mac is nice

SOME Macs are a PITA.

 

They do however have some issues:

 

Poor hardware reliability

Crappy GPUs

Printing

 

Nice things:

 

Target disk mode
