New PC problems

Hi,

 

We broke up last week so I am in building new PC's for a IT suite. I've gone for the AM2 chips with DDR2 667 memory. Problems arose when I went to use RIS to install the PC's. They have this weird NVIDIA network card which won't let me install the drivers for. Nvidia have a solution but it doesn't work (although the board is slightly different).

Problem is I didn't get a CD of floppy drive to save ££ so I am stuck. I used to use G4U which does find the network card but keeps dropping the connection and I find it quite slow.

 

It has boot from USB CD capability and I have a nice LACIE external hard drive so I might have to cobble something with that.

 

Ohh and the MB only has one SATA power connector so I need to buy a adapter to do disk to disk cloning.

 

Ohh again it doesn't like booting up to a USB stick.

 

It wouldn't be easywould it.

 

Oh and I am still waiting for 14 lots of the memory from CCL which I ordered 3 weeks ago.

 

All in all its not the best start to a school holiday.

 

I am off for a beer now and watch some Rugby.

Not much help to offer but I'd be interested to know which Motherboard you've got in that thing so I can avoid it like mad..

Just having a similar fun filled time. We resorted o Ghost Ent 7.5 [latest ver won't pull images] and creating a ghost_pxe RIS host - boot into ghost - image to and from.

 

Our untried backup plan was to piggy back into some older machines with 4 SATA connectors and image across. [

The Motherboards are the Biostar 6100 AM2 using the Nforce 410 chipset.

 

I eventually bought a USB DVD drive and copied them between drives. Took me longer to build the PC than it did copying the data.

 

Think I'll look at using Ghost or Acronis to copy a drive straight onto the external DVD burner when I have the time.

 

Pain in the arse this RIS at times, I've got some Lenovo machines that it doesn't like too.

With the ghost/ RIS method you don't need the network card drivers - just the initial boot to see the network.

Yes the nvidia network solution isent fantastic (you ever tried to use the 2 part ndis driver lol) The RIS drivers are technically under NDA and difficult to find on the web (you cant use the standard nvidia ethernet driver package as the network controller sits on its own bus NVNETBUS which must be loaded first) I have tested the special RIS driver and can confirm shock horror it can be made to work (there is an old version kicking round on the net but Asus put the new driver version on some recent CDs), if anybody would like it let me know and I will upload it and post a link.

This is why I never build PC's for a client. It might look cheap but when you consider the TCO building and troubleshooting etc etc. branded systems with quality NIC's start to look attractive.
