Joomla Facebook Clone / Addon

Hey Guys n Gals

 

We've just had a request from the SLT for a facebook page for ex-students at school. I have gone through the usual e-safety and general "We Have No Control Over this" stuffs. However one of my techs has been looking into a facebook style addon for our joomla site. We have looked at JomSocial and Joomunity and are erring on the side of JomSocial...

 

So the question is ... anyone out there have any experience of either of these two addons or can you suggest anything else.

You will probably find one already on facebook. Would the e-safety apply because these are ex students and it would be something done out of school?

I agree with you there... however if this is to be a school run thing then I want more control over what is posted and who joins.. in a kind of Alumni rather than any old T D or H being able to join the group

You might struggle, if there is already an established group with photos, videos and forum posts there why would they move? Also if i was in that situation i wouldn't go with the controlled official group but the group that basically allows you to say what you like.

A suggestion, why not use PHPBB3 on a subdomain... like this very site.

 

It has galleries, groups, users, a forum. Could require some fetalling but the results would speak for themselves.

I run JomSocial. Not for school, for personal. Its fantastic and powerful and is literally a facebook clone, It's also around the £100 mark at the moment I think. You checked out community builder? It's not as easy to use or as powerful in my opinion but it works when you get head round it and it's free. There's also buddypress for wordpress which is free if you were going down the subdomain route. Edited July 15, 2009 by Dodgex1

My old school has an 'official' facebook group, ran by a couple of alumni students who are also part of the school's official former pupil association. A member of staff is also "admin" on the facebook group. It works great.
