Google earth cachepath

Hi all

 

If you change the cachepath in the registry to a network share and have have 100+ workstations all using Google Earth at the same time will it work?

 

I mean, will it pop up with an access denied file in use or will it support 40 clients and share the cache files?

 

I heard there is a 2 gig limit of the cachefile anyway is it really worth it? We are getting high traffic with our proxy with google earth probably 50mb a day or higher.

 

Will the other user using the same cache path wipe the old cache file? Or will they all share it building a big cache.

why not instruct your web proxy to cache the data for longer?

We have our Google Earth cache on a network share and have had no problems so far.

Although the max number of concurrent users has probably not gone over 30 so far.

Same here. Just make sure its a good server and not the one where your profiles are kept if you have multiple servers.

I've done some tests and it does let multiple users share the same cache, however I'm not sure there are any performance advantages, especially with the maximum size. I read on the interwebnet that the google cache file is locked and it can't be shared.

I'm wondering if the last user to close overwrites the cache rather than adds to it? (Not sure? Anyone know)

 

Google earth doesn't like proxies very much, and by default won't load stuff from an HTTP proxy. However, somebody has written a config file for Squid which means it will work transparently. This will also allow you have a larger cache. If you were really keen you could use an old computer to make a dedicated google earth proxy.

I changed the cachepath in reg on 2 xp machines. It seems once 1 user is using GE it locks the cache file, the other client works but it doesnt use the cache until the first user closes GE. This was only a quick test, give it a try and see what happens for you? This was full everyone acesss and full access to the share.
