imiddleton25 Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 Has anyone seen this been sent by a staff member to the whole school You may not be aware but next week, all UK mobiles will be on a directory which will mean that anyone will be able to access the numbers so will be open for cold calling. It is easy to unsubscribe but it must be done before the beginning of next week to make sure that you are ex directory. You may want to unsubscribe any personal mobiles or advise friends and family accordingly. Removal is recommended by the BBC. Follow this link and go to the home page, then select Ex-Directory at the top right and follow the instructions which are quite painless The only directory with millions of mobile numbers - 118800

bmdixon Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 Just watched the video on the bbc, and it's not quite so bad. If someone searches for you, you will get a text so ask if you want them to be given your number. Still not happy about it but at least it won't be quite so freely available.

My Dad gets REALLY angry with people calling him on the home phone, can't imagine how bad it'll be when they start calling his mobile

Martin Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 If you click on "ex-directory", you are effectively confirming your phone number! I would leave it until the unlikely event that they do try to connect someone to you (via text or call forwarding) and opt-out then. I can't see them staying in business for long - lets just hope the administrators don't sell their database to someone who would mis-use it mb
srochford Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 I think this is just a non-story! The company charges to connect you to the person you want; I think it's about 50p. No direct sales company is going to pick random names and then pay 50p to get a chance to call them! As ever, the sales companies will get mobile numbers in the same way they get land line numbers and they will buy lists of numbers with info about what sort of person you are (male/female; young/old; interested in double glazing etc etc). A raw list of "person X has phone number 12345" is not a lot of use without the matching info about what person X might be tempted to buy!
