How much would it cost to hire in 2 techs for 2 1/2 weeks

Hi guys,

 

Just wondering, have any of you hired in a couple of techs to assist with your summer jobs (for about 2 1/2 to 3 weeks)? If so, how much and what companies?

 

Looks like we're going to be doing a bit more than what we were expecting and need to find out if it is feasible or not (comes within budget).

 

Any info would be greatly appreciated

Where abouts are you?

 

I know theres several techs on here that are looking for some summer work (including me, are you in the East Midlands area, +/- 20 or so miles from Leicester?). No idea how much it would cost, but I wouldn't work for any less than what I get in a typical term time week.

Local technology college, or even school. See if anyone is keen for work experience.

 

I remember being keen for any experience when i was in college.

Also by the summer holidays of my first year of college i was fully CompTia A+ trained.. so they should know their stuff.

If what you want is people to unbox machines, stick them on desks and do a fairly automated imaging process then any of the temp agencies should be able to help. Take care that you make clear what sort of person you want; some agencies just take the first person on the list and they may not be appropriate so you need to make sure that you can go back to the agency and say "not this one; you're not getting paid unless they match the description I've given you"

 

In my last place I think we paid about £10-£12 an hour for this sort of work.

It's agency work though. It includes all overheads plus contract rates.

You could proberly get some of your kids to volunteer for minimium wage/experiance

Call it a summer school, get a load of kids in and you might even get a grant

Do your Council/local authority have a "supply & relief" service? Basically a list of people who are on the payroll and live within the area - CRB checked and all - who work "as required" go into schools to cover for sickness/absence, or for extra workloads.

 

Not sure about the cost - such staff here basically get minimum wage and no rights (I'd know, I am one!).

 

Alternatively do you have any reliable 6th formers who might be after a bit of work over the summer? This is how I ended up joining!

Thanks guys for the input, it would include unboxing PC's creating builds & ghosting, terminating network points, cable runs (for new suites). Upgrading and replacing old suites...

No we don't ... we have no central IT support services in the LA and schools have to buy their own in or employ someone in house.

 

And people say that LAs are dictatorial and force systems onto people!!! Chance would be a fine thing!

Same here - but the LA keep a register of people for short-term work (not just in IT but in other areas - for example there's a science technician who comes in when it's practical exam time, a receptionist who covers if the usual lady is off sick etc). Obviously, things may be different in other areas.

Unfortunately we don't have anything like that but I am trying to get together a list of folks who would be happy to do this sort of thing, but very unofficial.

depends when you are doing it Wagnerk, i'd book a week off for some extra work during the summer, although the first 2 weeks ish will be spent here at Unity doing exactly the same thing

£10- £12 per hour for techy work over summer is very good!

 

I have just taken on a volunteer who is willing to help for free!
