alan-d Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 We have the old IE7 crashing randomly bug on a couple of PCs. I'm out of ideas! Vanilla Network, XP Pro SP3 Unintall and reinstall IE7 does not have an affect. Removing SP3 has no effect. Removing all toolbars and add-ons has no effect. Even a repair from XP CD has no effect. It is not profile related. No specific program seems to be responsible, even Adobe, Flash, Policy Central etc No Malware\Spyware or Viruses present. No specific errors recorded anywhere, just the usual 'The instruction at "insert code" referenced memory at "insert code" .......... blah blah, iexplorer.exe error etc etc etc! Rebuilding or re-imaging the PCs will probably cure it but is a cop-out, I want to know why it does it and what the fix is. Any suggestions or discoveries since the last thread on this?
SteveT Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 Reinstall Flash. Seems to solve the problem more often than not .......... no idea why!!! 1
alan-d Posted June 26, 2009 Author Posted June 26, 2009 Thanks but I did that and shockwave. I've uninstalled and reinstalled just about everything
alan-d Posted June 29, 2009 Author Posted June 29, 2009 IE8 is an option but we also use Policy Central and from bits I've picked up the 2 don't like each other.
lbradley Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 tried disabling all active x components see what happens then, or run IE without addons 1

Michael Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 If it's any consolation the same/similar things are happening where I am today too. There are times where browsing is fast and other times where browsing times out completely. I have a feeling that not all BGFL problems have been ironed out. There are still some gremlins in the network somewhere. 1
alan-d Posted June 29, 2009 Author Posted June 29, 2009 I don't think this is related to BGFL as it's a widely reported problem. Plenty of forums discuss it but no definitive cure
Michael Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 One problem I have noticed today (definitely BGFL related) is downloading files occasionally stops and doesn't complete. Other times it works fine. This is from different sources using IE7/IE8. The browser definitely isn't crashing as you can continue to browse as normal once you cancel the download. Take the laptop home and it works straight away so something isn't right. If it is a seperate issue, do the event logs reveal any useful information? Sometimes they can provide additional information to the errors you see on screen. You could try removing the latest IE security update within Add/Remove programs, although as you've already tried repairing and uninstalling/re-installing IE, this would remove any additional IE security updates anyway. Is it the same model of PC you're having problems with by any chance? What happens if you use an alternative browser as a temporary workaround?
linkazoid Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 I would uninstall Policy Central from the computer and see.... It's been causing no end of trouble here, with crashing IE, even though we dont use any of the web features of PCE. PCE support haven't been too helpful with a fix. Michael
lbradley Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 Weird i wish i had a machine it was happening on to Experiment. I like little projects like that

Everything works fine in FF, even the download issue you mentioned seems to work better in FF. There is nothing in the event logs and I've tried the removal of Security updates etc. It is the same model type of PC that seems to be affected but only a select few. (4 that we know of). Going to try a new image on them soon. I would uninstall Policy Central from the computer and see.... Michael I've done this once already but I'll try it again.

Earlier versions did create various problems I agree. The best advice I can offer is to provide as much information as possible. Basics such as OS, browser version, any applications open, what website you were trying to look at. All this can be used to isolate the problem.
Michael Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 Everything works fine in FF, even the download issue you mentioned seems to work better in FF. It is really odd that downloading works better in FF. There is no logical explanation to this. The problem with FF however is it still suffers from compatibility problems and most users find it confusing using two browsers. IE is still far more manageable and compatible with pretty much anything.
DevilsAdvocate Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 3.0.0.7 has been nothing but trouble for us here!

Michael Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 All looks normal to me with a healthy amount of memory. Have you tried running a Scandisk on the system drive of the problematic machines? This'll require a reboot in 2000/XP. You could also try running sfc /scannow and see if this helps, or alternatively re-image. I would definitely perform a Scandisk before re-imaging just to be sure.
Michael Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 3.0.0.7 has been nothing but trouble for us here! If you provide as much information as possible, Link2ICT do pass on discovered bugs with Policy Central to the developers. v3.0.0.7 is much better, but it's interesting you still have problems. It could well be another compatibility issue which could help others in future versions.
alan-d Posted June 30, 2009 Author Posted June 30, 2009 Update. I removed PCE (again!) and the problem seems to have stopped. Why this didn't happen the first time I did it I don't know, but it may have been a combination of things which I've since removed and reinstalled. I now have put PCE back on so if the problem arises again I'll know it was the cause
alan-d Posted July 3, 2009 Author Posted July 3, 2009 Another Update It is definately PCE causing the problem. I emailed Forensics and got the following reply from Paul I can confirm that we have recently identified an issue with both IE7 and IE8 recent security cumulative updates which invoke a different protocol at winsock level where out engine monitors. This can cause intermittent IE performance issues. An auto update (3008) will be available within the next 5 - 7 days that fixes this issue. Fingers crossed it works

They still suggested we update to the latest version, even with the issues!
alan-d Posted July 3, 2009 Author Posted July 3, 2009 In reality the errors happen on both 3.0.0.0 and 3.0.0.7 so you would have had just as many problems.
