Rapidshare is now being actively blocked by BT.

 

I can access their servers through a proxy but not directly. Bit of a pain really, but welcome to the land of tomorrow. I guess thats the price you pay when the world and his wife use a service for things that might be against a services terms and conditions.

 

https access also works, and the service has come alive again.

Try a TRACERT to rapidshare to see where your packets go!

 

I am with Demon, and all attempts to get to RapidShare end up getting routed via IWF servers (and terminate there!!!). They used to just contaminate DNS, but now even numerical IPs get snatched

 

So, because somebody has reported possible KP at RapidShare, every single access gets snooped (and often blocked) by an unelected and unaccountable bunch of do-gooders

I think this is a trend that will continue to be honest. With more and more pressure being applied to ISPs to 'act' on person(s) possibly infringing on copyright, they block the whole site. You could always phone and complain, but how far it'll get you with an organisation the size of BT, who knows...

This isn't related to copyright. The IWF are in charge of child porn related lists, so if they are involved with blocking, then it is to do with the site having contained child porn.

This is just wrong! Rapidshare are a completely legal business (lawsuit?) and I use them all the time! (for sending files to publishers). I am with BT openworld at the moment and I can use it at the moment (via. rs32tg.rapidshare.com since the main rapidshare firewall is down, that's why its displaying tcp_error).

amending pages to https works for now, also accessing it via a proxy site (you have heard of those right ) but basically if I reboot the BT box, and wait 5 minutes it will start working. I think it's my account that is being blocked, and if my ip address changes it takes the system a long old while to single me out again. Not sure if this is correct but it sure as hell looks that way.

Hi guys, I registed to let you know how to fix this! Just be aware if you dont do this exact it wont work!

 

1, Start IE and start the BT hub manager by typing 192.168.1.254 into the address bar and hit enter

2, Click the settings at the top of the page and enter your password

3, Click advanced settings ( top right ) and click continue to advanced settings

4, Click A-Z and go down to FIREWALL and click it

5, Your firewall setting will be on default, change this to disabled and click apply settings

 

And thats it! Rapidshare works perfect again! =]

 

**EDIT**

BT have now admitted that if your using a BT hub you wont be able to download from rapidshare over wireless as they have messed up their firmware update. Ethernet cable plugged in works but your have to wait 8 weeks for them to update the firmware again to allow it to be fixed ( this is drirect from BT today ) The above worked for me all day untill tonight when they updated the firmware again! morons! i now using a belkin router with no problems =]

Could actually work to my benifit now, i spoke to a manager at BT who said if they wasnt able to fix it by next friday ( you have to give them 5 days ) they will let me off my contact and allow me to leave

 

Nice to see the BT workers are loyal lol tho alot just gt made redundant so!

copy these two lines in the hosts file which is located in

 

windows > system32 > drivers > etc

 

(open it with notepad by right clicking, then once entered, hit save)

thanks for the advice, will have a look at that as im not entirely sure on pro's and cons of editing the host file.

There's nothing wrong in principle editing the hosts file. When you make requests within your browser, it looks to the host file first and then your ISPs DNS server. Changing to OpenDNS's servers (at router level), would mean all machines in a network environment would then connect to OpenDNS's servers automatically when making requests.

 

Hijacking DNS (which is what BT have appeared to have done) can also be used for malicious purposes and is one method tricksters use to direct users to fake banking websites. In your HOSTS file, if you enter:

 

83.166.174.50 www.google.com

 

Now try visiting Google and see what happens

It's unfortunate that the many have to suffer for the perversions of a few, RapidShare have been reported as having child pornography on their servers and it will take them a few days to purge this filth from their system, so let's have a little patience. Child abusers need to be caught and jailed as we cannot hang, draw and quarter them in public anymore:mad:.

 

I spotted a dodgy file today on rapidshare, normally I report them, but BT and others seem to have the problem in hand. I left Thundernews for a similar reason because I can't in conscience contribute to an organisation that allows this unacceptable content.

 

I know that some of you are shut of from some of your beloved files, but it won't be long and most tech savvy peeps can get around the problems until they catch the paedophile creepozoids.

If it's true that there are inappropriate images being hosted, I agree that immediate action needs to take place, but I don't think it's appropriate to block the whole website. I am quite positive Rapidshare and other file hosting sites have strict policies and guidelines in place and adhere to the international communities efforts to combat and remove inappropriate child images.

The IWF usually just block individual pages within sites like rapidshare when things like this happen AFAIK. So why a site used by millions of peoples for legal purposes is being blocked is bizarre.

 

It'd be like blocking hotmail.com because a few users sent child porn on there...

If one person has done it via a BT connection (note BT runs btopenzone), I'm sure BT would shut down connections to Rapidshare until such time as it's "safe", nothing is stopping them from doing it again, and lets face it, no one wants to help the $£%"%" spread the material or destroy evidence.

I pay through the *** for a fast internet connection, on top of this I pay more to use rapidshare. OBeing intentionally blocked from using a paid for service is just unacceptable.
