We don't have a sharepoint server, so I don't have the faintest idea about how to go about writing a webpart. I simply have a Python script that chugs through a bunch of CSV files and writes PNG and PDF documents out, all indexed by an HTML file or two. No reason you couldn't simply set the script to output somewhere where your web server will be ablke to serve the files. What is it a webpart does? -- David Hicks

Python etc... won't work.
p858snake Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 I think it was their scan-to-SIMS product we saw last week at Sharp's showroom. It integrates a scanner with SIMS - you use a small LCD panel attached to a photocopier/scanner to pick a student and enter some details ("note from home", etc) then scan in a document that is attached to that student's SIMS record. Nice, and it looked like it worked well, but it did strke me that you could make a system like that very easily. Just get a list of students from SIMS, make each one a folder on a computer somewhere, then hook up a scanner to a dedicated PC with a small touch-screen panel attached and write a program that asks for a student name and drops scanned documents into the appropriate folder. -- David Hicks *Ask for a student number due to you wanting it to be unique and to be put in the correct folder in cases of multiple students. Python etc... won't work. However, you could use an image web part and just overwrite the file each time you generated a new one.
dhicks Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 Ask for a student number The user interface would let you select a user by name, but naturally you would store scanned documents linked to a unique ID, i.e. the student number produced by SIMS. You would also want to run the scan in though a automated system that ads a white area at the bottom to stamp the date, time and staff member id (of the person that scanned it in) for extra protection. Probably better to store that data as proper data somewhere so you can search through it later. -- David Hicks

A webpart is a dll file on a Windows machine, and it gets loaded wherever you place it on a sharepoint page. And, so long as 'IronPython' works as CLR code when compiled, I don't see why not.

Charting is OK - it's the issue of not being able to access the data within SIMS in the right way, and not being able to access it outside of SIMS without having to export it first...

We just imported all our ULNs via CTF so it ought to be possible to create an XML file with the appropriate fields for email address and import a via CTF or am I being naive

I've downloaded AutoIt having come across this thread and although I have some programming skills, I don't have the time to play with it (thought it would be more like a macro recording, so I could cheat and actually do the first one, then check the script to see what commands to use)....does anyone have an AutoIt script (or at least something to get me started) that they would be prepared to share? I got grumpy a couple of weeks ago because I had a big csv file of contact details referenced against admission numbers to input and wrote to Capita and told them so! After telling me several times that it wasn't possible I got a response from one of their Sys Analysts with the patches "#17188, a script, then #17195" @vikpaw mentions above and instructions on how to use them. If you'd like a copy as an alternative solution, let me know and I'll send them across. Don't know if it works as I haven't had time to try them.......

CSV , but it will also work on root of C: drive now, and if required it's trivial to alter the .sql to add another IF clause or just hard code it, if indeed you have a PC without either C or D drives I have another one that does it by admission number that was custom written for me, but locked to a particular version and when i asked for the version to be 999'ised as i like to refer to it, they sent me this new method.
