FSRM Disk Quotas

I been given the lovely task of implementing disk quotas on the staff and students folders, never had to do this before and MS document is being less than helpfull.

 

It appears easy to install and configure.....a little to easy,

 

Windows 2003/R2 and being setup on exisiting folders along the lines of

d:\students\StudentName

d:\staff\Staffname

d:\staff\SharedStafffolder

 

not sure of the size of quotas or how im going to alert the users they dont all have email address's

 

any advice?

It might be worth using a soft quota limit to start with so as to provide an initial guage this would also enable all users to be informed that they have reached a limit. once you then enforce the hard limit they cannot say they were not warned.

 

In terms of setting the limits I would suspect that Y7 thru 8 will not need as much space as say Y10 and 11 working on course work. Staff will need more of course.

 

Going in Blind will cause you more problems than going in knowing what the current state of play is on your servers and network.

To give you an idea of what we set our limits to:

• Staff - No Limit
  
• Y7 - 100mb
  
• Y8 - 150MB
  
• Y9 - 200MB
  
• Y10 - 250MB
  
• Y11 - 300MB
  
• Y12 - 500MB
  
• Y13 - 700MB
  

 

Although we may need to start applying quotas to staff as i have a handful of staff which now have home directories with 30GB + of "stuff" in there! It causes chaos with file sync!

By applying a quota limit to staff you should be able to help them to stop hoarding files that they will probably never use again.

 

In on of the centres that I support we have one guy that keeps hold of digital tv records and so you can imagin that space gets filled up quickly.

Bah... far too lenient.

 

We have 100mb quotas for students and 150mb quotas for staff.

 

 

Which sounds really mean, except I usually increase this quite happily if they ask, and sometimes even if they don't, on a whim, if I notice the event log has some near quota limits.

 

We have some staff (and students) that are around the 5gb, although there are only about 20 users (out of 1800) that have over 1gb.

Due to limitations we currently give all students 30Mb untill 6th form then it's 100Mb, we'll be increasing this next year but they all manage to live within that restraint. Last year we forgot to apply quotas to year 7 when I finally noticed most of them had around 100Mb of work, making them stick to a limit forces them to think about compressing images in word docs and not just emptying multi Gb memory cards onto drives, staff are terrible for doing that.
