Shame the school is undergoing the BSF process. How long until the successful candidate is made redundant / tuped?

No, in most cases they will be TUPED but why would anyone wanna be TUPED to RM etc

I dont like all this Managed Service rubbish

At the end of the day if the word CHEAP comes to mind with schools they will kick there in-house IT out which is such a shame.

Actually most of the time it turns out MORE expensive as the managed services company actually spends a realistic amount on IT, when most schools find out how much they should spend they're shocked. The word that I use to think about managed services is homogenised, it stifles innovation.

I see! I know a school where a company called Dataspire took on the managed service of the network.

The previous ICT support staff were reduced to changing mouse balls, toner and studnet passwords. They wern't even allowed admin rights to the server which was all done remotly.

I wonder how well a system like this works and how happy anyone would be in that situation. would love to hear from anyone who has been TUPE!

I suspect BSF is the reason that the word new technologies manager is in the title to protect the job from BSF?

Russ

+1 on that (do we ever disagree on anything, Russ?)

lots of schools are pre-empting any potential neg effects of BSF by re-writing job descs and roles to include more curriculum specs for their techies, so they become exempt from BSF

The introduction of this sort of role introduces the function of the 'intelligent client', someone who can manage and QA the service provided, help structure how the school deals with the service and works with the MSP to make sure the school gets what they need.

This is sort of reflected in the new FITS materials under service management.

So the schools are still paying for an educated/experienced ICT person (who used to run their network) to protect them from the MSP they are now paying to provide the IT service. Cue an increase in government spending.

Managing things with the MSP will only take up a certain amount of their time. This is something that may have otherwise been done by someone in Manglement (including the Business Manager) who is even more expensive.

The additional time this person has can be easily taken up with training, working with those using the VLE, R&D ... and a number of other things that they may already be doing anyway actually. Depending on how the contract is set up with the LA and MSP there are things that might be missed so this person fills in some of those gaps.

And yes ... this person has to have a decent educational awareness and background, work on education strategies and even support students and teachers, things that some folk might not want to do.
