tmbenson Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 Ok, so i have recently installed PClinuxOS. So far everything is goin great and i am enjoying using the distro. Everything installs sweetly, except for wine, this is perhaps my own fault as im unsure which version to install! Ubuntu, Debian, Red hat, Suse etc..... anybody got any experience with this distro that can help? Thanks in advance. Tom
Jamo Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 Its packages are rpm so I would suspect suse. According to the site its based on Mandriva. Have you tried compiling? Always fun!! 1
Arcath Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 yeah if its an RPM based package system i would recommend Redhat or SuSE packages, does it not have repos that you can just install wine from?
tmbenson Posted June 9, 2009 Author Posted June 9, 2009 Ok allow me to explain im a complete newbie to linux, got used to gnome for a little while and then moved on to KDE, which isnt as pretty! i have checked the repos, nothing naturally in there so have added the link from winehq.org to sources.list, and still nothing working! and could you run me through the "compiling" process for wine, like i said, new to this distro. Jamo Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 You should have Synaptic installed which would allow you to browse the packages available on the repos you have selected. Have you tried that? Synaptic may be called "Package Manager" or something similar. Compiling is the last step really lol I am not sure on PCLinuxOS but for most you install a package called "Build-Essential" which includes all the compiler software then download all the dependencies for Wine (which will be listed in the source code for the project) then type "make" (usually )

Unfortunatly i dont appear to have that as a command! anyone help with this and i may be on my way to solving this problem. Thanks again! Tom

PCLinuxOS is an rpm based distribution utilizing apt-get with a Synaptic Software Manager frontend From the PC Linux OS Site. Try as super user command line: apt-get install wine
tmbenson Posted June 9, 2009 Author Posted June 9, 2009 oh ive tried that, if i take the source from winehq it STILL say can not find package wine! When using linux mint or ubuntu this worked great, seems to be a different kettle of fish entirely. And its driving me nuts! Will keep trying but any ideas are more than welcome!
Jamo Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 Have you checked you have all the repos activated in Synaptic. Have a look in the options menus in the program Synaptic itself. If you do then try redownloading all the repo data. apt-get update
tmbenson Posted June 9, 2009 Author Posted June 9, 2009 tried to run the updates, seems to fail also, i am aware that i am correctly exporting the networks proxy, but sitll get the error: E: tried to dequeue a fetching object for all of the updates? Any help with this? could this be part of my problem?
Jamo Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 I tihnk this could be the source of it. We have an RM Smartcache here which i beleive is a squid box with their name on it. Had to install OidentD and do the following create: /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/proxy ( That is a file called "proxy" in the folder /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/ ) Add the following lines to the text file: // Configure apt to use a proxy Acquire::http::Proxy "http://:8080"; Acquire::ftp::Proxy "http://:8080"; This sorted the proxy issue here.

Can you bypass your proxy at all? Im guessing you can access the internet itself? Have you thought of downloading rpm packages directly from WineHQ? tmbenson Posted June 9, 2009 Author Posted June 9, 2009 ok it would appear that i have solved it, but not exactly as mentioned. after changing the proxy settings you mentioned i still got nothing, For those interested or for future use i managed to finally get it working by accessing the proxy server from a windows machine and manually adding the IP address of the linux machine to a custom NAT list, allowing me to bypass merilly. Altough this did not work the first time! so im guessing it was a combination of the 2, Thanks for all your help. Tom
Jamo Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 I will have to try this OS, so far I have been using Ubuntu on and off at home but thats it. Tried SuSE once too but thought KDE was horrible. Glad its working!

tmbenson Posted June 9, 2009 Author Posted June 9, 2009 Ha! That's one way of doing it! The proxy setting from with the control centre should be all you need, though. I have found that if you change things manually things can get unpredictable. and yes guess it can, will have to keep my eye on it
