Hi guys,

Been having a few issues over the past few weeks where external emails are being bounced back occasionally. I'd put it off until now, and am looking at our exchange server. In task manager "store.exe" is using almost all the available memory and is still climbing, spiking the cpu to 30% every 20 seconds or so (current memory use is 824000K).

Is this normal?

Does anyone have any ideas why the bouncing emails are intermittent? I've tried resending and if they do fail they will work a few minutes later, so it isn't a keyword filter...

Cheers,

Dom

The store service is supposed to use up as much avalible memory as possible to make the server as responcive as possible. If the CPU is hitting that hard though there could be huge amounts of traffic going through your server or your data store could have some errors in it that an online scan and defrag it attemping to fix. Dismounting the store/restarting the server may allow it to write this section out to disk and deal with it propperly.

You may also benifit from using eseutil to run a scan/defrag on your mail database in order to check and repair it if it is badly cooked though. Be sure to back up though as a damaged DB can lead to data loss.

perhaps running the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA ) will give you more insight about this problem

You can also try the Exchange Best Practice Analyser which should ensure that your Exchange box is configured correctly.

When you say that e-mails are bouncing back, it could be antispam measures that are causing it. Do you route through an external mailhost or direct to the recipient's mail server? If the latter, do you have your reverse DNS (rDNS) configured correctly to match your sending domain/MX record?

Yeh the mem usage is very typical behaviour for exchange, depending on your number of users you may want to shove more memory in to the server.

If you provide more deatils about your number of users, server spec, os and exchange version i will be able to tell you where your bottle neck is.
