Bit of a strange one - S2K3 hangs when trying to open folder

I've been off a few days and come back to a bit of a strange problem.

 

I've been setting up a new user this morning and this meant that i needed to create a folder in the D:\Users directory.

 

Problem is, everytime i navigate to D:\ then click on any one of the folders exlplorer.exe hangs and i need to ctrl+alt+delete to close it.

 

I can navigate to \\servername\users and everything is ok.

users are logging on fine.

The speed of the server seems fine

Nothing unusual or helpful in the eventlog.

 

I've reset the server and the raid5 array shows as online and all 3 drives spin up ok

Checked the free space on the drive (over 150GB free)

checked the disk for errors - none found

Run defrag analyzer - drives do not need defragmenting

I've not installed anything or updated any software on this server.

Sophos says the drives are clean.

 

Any ideas?

what antivirus are you using? I had this once with the antivirus suddenly deciding to scan all the information in that folder right then and there causing explorer to hang. Try turning off your antivirus first

 

Otherwise you may have corruption, can you access it via a CMD prompt? Make sure that your backups have been able to store those folders too.

We're using sophos, Have turned off AV but its still happening.

 

Yes i can access them via CMD prompt and run from the start menu

I can access the folders on other computers.

 

If I click on the folders and then don't move the mouse the contents will show after a while. larger folders take longer to show
