Wow, I remember using an acoustic modem when I was about five... I was only allowed an hour at a time because of the phone bills!

I ran up massive bills when I first got onto the internet in 1994/95. Then BT introduced free weekends a few weekends later with a 2 hour cutoff, and I remember redialling at 23:59:00 to get an extra 2 hours out of them

Lol, I remember doing the same. Was on Demon Internet - £10 per month + local rate phone call - from 1993 onwards.

 

I remember flirting with Compuseve and AOL, and PlusNet (on ISDN) before Freeserve came alone and then eventually Broadband.

 

But, does any body remember trying to get (and stay) online for free with these guys...

Don't know about the UK's computer provisioning (as I work/live in the Netherlands), but i think the situation over here isn't much better... I've got PC's and servers which are over 6 years old

 

But I did mean 'real vintage' hardware... At home I've got an old Commodore 64, one of the first 80386 PC's, a five meg harddrive (5.25", full height) etc. etc.

I had a bt 0800 number I got from someone on IRC circa 96/97 that I used 24/7 on and off for about a year a half before BT intro'd the weekend stuff Then there was some RedHotAnt username and passwords for 0800 accounts that I managed to pick up some place RedHotAnt hit by heavy users ? I remember dialling up to some 8'clock thing for two hours with no charge for a while, no idea what it was called. Lines used to open at 7:58 so getting in there quick was a must!

There were various scams, dialling some random telephone exchange in Honolulu, then stealing their line with a computer generated blackbox tone. Leet phreakers would break into the large telephone companies, and then sell eg AT&T numbers so we could spend all afternoon downloading some 1MB Amiga game at some poor american's expense.

lol, closest I got was phrack magazine from bbs. In those days you could download the terrorists cookbook without being raided

TBH I didn't spend so much time on the boards, I only had 2400 at the time when 14.4HST was becoming commonplace. My paper round wouldn't extend to such luxuries as a 'high speed' modem.

AT&T cards were available in the early 90's. Yes - bluebox is a tonegenerator - my amiga used to do it

What used to make me laugh about Phrack was the fact that Lex Luther was not really a hacker of sorts - he just spoke about it a great deal. And this was the guy who ran it !!

 

This talk is taking me back, back to when I was >>cough<< playing around with modems that my Dad used to bring home from work.....
