Psymon Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 Hi, Our Marketing office is interested in trying to find a peice of software that does the old army-style pins into maps. She intends to use this for looking at pupil home locations, cachment area, and also using the program in the bursary for the minibus pickup routes. Ideally it can search by postcode or street name, allow pins to be placed at these locations etc... Anyone ever heard of something that does this? Many thanks, Simon
jamesb Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 Google Earth? I believe there was a thread a while ago about someone wanting to import all of their pupil addresses into Google Earth to do pretty much what you said. Microsoft AutoRoute might be another option. Edit: Et voila - http://www.edugeek.net/forums/how-do-you-do/31274-plotting-1500-postcodes-map.html
RabbieBurns Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 I put a thing on our school website that you type in the postcode, and it plots the route from the school to that postcode on google maps.
tom_newton Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 It is difficult - you can't do it all with google maps, coz the API won't georeference points for you. This tends to cost, because the post office charge for it. I used to work for these lot: Graticule - Postcode Analyst 3 - Plotting Customers and Mapping Territories for Business Analysis That's not that bad a bit of kit. Mention I sent you if you call them... see if they still remember me after 7 years
Sandman Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 Google Earth? I believe there was a thread a while ago about someone wanting to import all of their pupil addresses into Google Earth to do pretty much what you said. This was what sprung to mind for me. Google Earth allows location and info tagging.
webman Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 Using Google Maps, you can click 'My Maps' link on the left, and create shareable maps with multiple points and routes.
