Fuji Siemens / Enterasys Switches

We've been looking to upgrade our network this summer, and have received a bunch of tenders from various companies, mostly offering Cisco/HP/3Com switches. But we have also had a company suggest Enterasys switches (who I had never heard of), they are apparently part of Siemens, and used to be called Cabletron.

 

I can't find anything useful about them, apart from the fact that about 5 years ago some of their board were sent to Jail... They are apparently big in Colleges and Universities, they have given me a couple of reference sites, to contact, but realistically, these are people who have been selected by them.

 

Does anyone use them, or have used them ?

 

If so, are the switches any good, or would it be best to just go with HP ?

Never of herd of them, but looking on the website the range looks quite comprehensive, how do the specs, warranty and prices stack up against the HP's?

They look very similar, except they're black... which has to be a plus point.

Anywhere wwhere we can install half a dozen sexy black switches as opposed to the boring grey HPs or the Green Ciscos, has to be a good idea.

 

They look the same really, a switch is a switch. But I was hoping someone on here would either come on and say "..nope they're rubbish, don't touch.." or "..excellent, best switch ever, I have them at home..".

We have 6 N7 chassis with platinum/diamond DFE blades, and they work great. We also have a slew of the C2 and A2 stackables, and they also seem to be pretty solid. If you go for it, check out the Netsight software suite, as I believe it is an essential tool to fully utilize their platforms (Console, Policy Mgr, and Inventory Mgr is what I use). We also use their RoamAbout wireless system, which works well enough, but I feel that the HighPath system by Siemens (which Enterasys now owns a division of) is a better solution.

 

BTW, the company I work for was also a Cabletron customer for years...

Enterasys were a company who we had a serious look at when we were speccing equipment for our new college. It all seemed perfectly reasonable but I don't think they really stood out.

 

We ended going up with HP Procurve kit

Aye. We ended up going with them in the end, as the whole deal including the phone system cost less than the others.

 

And the switches are all fine. I've even gotten used to the different CLI config on the switches, to the extent I now get confused when I have to use the two non-enterasys switches (an 8 port Netgear, and a 24 port HP for the iSCSI).
