1tb hard drive ?

Just about to get a Tb hard drive and was just wondering which drive to go for as there are

 

the samsung spinpoint, the WD Caviar and the hitachi deskstar , Not sure about the barracuda seagate as there was a post on here a while back about all of those returns / issues people were having and all the stuff they had to go through to recover data and dont really fancy that.

SAMSUNG have the best results in the labs tests - just got one myself and it's good

 

WD Green would be good in a home server with low access but other than that use Samsung F1 is best

I've got 2 of these in my Nas Box can't fault them.

Forgot to mention am going to be using it with a 2008 mac pro and have read in a few places how people have had vista or xp and it keeps locking up on them and they have ran the diagnostic tool from samsung which comes out fine as no errors so not so sure.

I have 4 of the 1 TB F1 drives at home in my RAID. Fantastic drives that are quiet and really fast.

 

Bet its a lot quieter than my RAID 0 raptors!! Couldn't afford more than one F1 at the time, but wish I had more now as I have tons of smaller drives instead at the moment!

I have a WD Green 2TB drive in my home media PC. Quiet, energy friendly and tons of capacity. I'd go Samsung for a 1TB though as I've had fantastic experiences from them in the past. My last drive was a 750GB Spinpoint F1 and was a blazing drive, if not exactly silent.

in our experience samsungs have a high failure rate, we have had no problems with western digital as a vendor

Also can someone recomend two 1tb hard drives ( one from WD and one from Hitachi )

 

Obviously think I will leave the F1 spinpoint as dont fancy a drive that has a high failure rate ( thanks for the info Simon )

Personally I cant comment on hitachi branded hard drives but I swear by WD and use 4 x 1TB WD's myself which Ive own now for 8 months with no problems.

In over 12 years of building and working with computers I've only ever had 3 drives die on me, and only 1 in a non-constant use home enviroment. That was an IBM drive, now Hitachi.

I know that but I only have about 80 quid or there abouts available so a 2tb drive at about £200 is a bit over my price range

For 1TB drives, the current performance king is the Seagate 7200.12, beats out the Spinpoint F1. So many of the new WD drives are Green Edition, which use less power but are effectively 5400rpm (and are markedly slower).

Seagate 1TB Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm 32MB Cache - OEM - Ebuyer

 

You have to be careful when ordering, as the specs are outwardly similar to the 7200.11 (last generation). These drives should not suffer from the notorious disappearing firmware fault Seagate have had to deal with (think that was the .10 series) so reliability should be sound. I have used and replaced nearly every brand of HDD, Seagate have been very good. I like Western Digital drives, but have had enough failures with them to know that they're no better than Seagate overall (obviously old Maxtors and IBM Deskstars are the main fatalities here!).

Ive used a few Hitachi Disks over the last few years and i don't recall any of them failing on me. I think the ones stuck in my Apple RAID (4 250GB) are hitachi drives as well. If i purchase any drives if the hitachi ones come in cheaper i do tend to buy those.

I've always found it the other way around i've had my samsung 1TB for a while now and no issues. Where as all the WD drives i've owned something has gone wrong, i've only got one WD left in my PC now and that is slowly dieing. I also find them to be quite noisy as far as drives go.
