Hi all,

A friendly hello from an edugeek in South Africa. Came upon the site while looking for some education resources and so far it looks pretty cool.

I will be posting a bunch more in the months/years to come :)

Welcome would love to know bit more about how education system is setup in south africa.

Russ

Badly mainly :)

Essentially it's broken up into Primary, Secondary and Tertiary education.

The part where they're actually in school (as opposed to University) is:

Foundation phase: Grade 1-3 (Age 6-10)

Intermediate phase: Grade 4-6 (10-13)

Senior phase: Grade 7-9 (13-16) - Kids are allowed to leave after Grade 9 if they want :/

Senior Phase part 2: 10-12 (16-18)

I work in the Intermediate phase :) Cute kids.

They also have a curriculum that has been rejected as a failure by numerous countries ( Outcomes based Education) and they now have a Matric (final Exam) that you can’t fail 

Yes... OBE needs to be shot in the eye. Horrible system. Also our government's fascination with not failing people means it's quite tough.

Poor kids.

They just want to give a foot-hold to the previously deprived ethnic population. Majority of companies wont employ idiots whatever status, however a Matriculated idiot is more pleasing.

I left South Africa at 14 with Parents, but came back from 18-20, and than back to the UK, I do miss it, every day.

@ahux: It's not only the foothold thing... that's fine. I just wish they'd implement it better. We should be producing people with both knowledge, skills and the neccesary confidence to perform well in the job market.

What we're getting is arrogant "can't touch me" people who can't read or write at a university level.

The first year of totally OBE schooled kids has just reached the Universities and the stats are appalling.

We'll get there though :)

 The canadian refugee. Country seems torn between thinking he's an idiot and wanting to join him. *sigh*

Calm down with your bandwidth there sunny ;) You may not have much international space left ;) I did find that amusing, paying around R700 a month for DSL at speeds of 0.8mb/s and only have 2GB of international bandwidth and unlimited local bandwidth.

Needless to say, there weren't many decent South African X Rated websites :(

Fortunately it's only the 3rd so it's not soo bad ;)

Oh and we don't have unlimited local bandwidth anymore - Telkom realised that we were enjoying our internet too much and now it's charged for.
