why doesn't this .adm work

This active directory template is meant to redirect the user shell folders to a new location, it used to work but ive had to delete the policy and remake it

 

As of remaking the policy and reattaching the template it hasn't picked up the settings from the template (the GPO settings tab just shows as completely empty under both computer and user)

Normally if you try and import a custom ADM and it has an error, it will give you a clue as to which line is causing the problem.

 

You can then open the ADM template using Notepad and navigate directly to the line in question. Edit > Go To...

It didn't pop up and say it had any errors, it just applied fine but without anything actually working.

 

I don't have an "edit > go to.." just edit then nothing, unless im thinking of somewhere else

That's a bit of mystery then. I presume the policy is based on per user and not per computer? Have you tried creating a new temporary OU and GPO to go with it? It could be conflicting with something else possibly.

 

The Edit > Go To... in Notepad - well it's available on 2003 Server (what I am using at the moment) and I believe XP too.

I can't find the "go to" bit you speak of, this is on server 2003 and xp too, I've tried creating a new GPO a few times with no luck, applied to different OUs too, i might just try rolling on some .reg file or something i guess in order to change the settings rather than doing it by gpo

Have you tried taking off the filter which will only show settings that can be fully managed? (Click on Administrative Templates then View -> Filtering -> Untick the Fully Managed box)

A silent reg install could be the alternative. I would try running it manually on one machine first to see whether it works, or whether there are restrictions in place stopping it being applied. You should check the event logs for this.

Am I right in thinking this adm will redirect a users temporary internet files to their h:?

not c:\doc settings\username ?

gah Why didn't I find this one before! I was battling with this last night and did a silent reg install in a batch file in the end.
