Dos_Box Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 Just as a quick heads up, I went to play a Blu-Ray movie last night and neither Power DVD 8 Ultra or Power DVD 7.3 (needed for HD-DVD playback) now display the movie, yopu get sound (sometimes), but the image does not display. Thsi is usign teh latest ATI W7 drivers on an Radeon HD 4670. This is now getting quite widely reported and I've had to fork out for a Power DVD 9 upgrade which (apparently) works fine. Is anyone else here using their PC with W7 to watch Blu-Ray or HD-DVD, and have you had any issues?
EduTech Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 Yes i had this problem as well when it came to play blueray movies on my laptop running windows 7. It has a ATI HD Graphics card There is no support for BlueRay on windows 7 i dont believe. James.
Jamo Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 It seems there are some contradicting posts on the web at the moment, as far as I am aware it has been confirmed that blu-ray support will be part of Windows 7. I hope so as it was my plan to get a media centre PC when I can afford it to go with the HDTV in the front room. I cant stand power dvd and the like, always found them slow and unresponsive programs so wouldn't want to really have to use them still.
Dos_Box Posted May 6, 2009 Author Posted May 6, 2009 From what I have read, Blu-Ray and HD-DVD (Obsolete I know) will only be supported via a third party program. Indeed W7 Media Center does fire up PowerDVD when a disk is inserted, but I'll have to wait until tonight to see if PowerDVD 9 works correctly

Jamo Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 mmm that wont be good if we have to open the blu ray in a separate window!!!! I can't stand doing that!! W7 NEEDS blu ray support! (ALthough i think HDDVD should have won, blu ray just copied its ideas down the line)
Theblacksheep Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 Bit pathetic from MS, acting like a sore loser. Hopefully it'll be added on release... but I've had a PS3 since dec06 and still only own 1 bluray, so not top of my list.

Dos_Box Posted May 7, 2009 Author Posted May 7, 2009 There will be NO native Blu-Ray support in W7. You will need a 3rd party decoder. These will however work within Media Center (mine does, but no video). I suspect the issue stems from my having upgraded from Vista when the advice is to do a fresh install which I will do pretty soon.

PowerDVD works from within Media Center perfectly, so my advice to anyone who want the 'full' experience is to do a clean install rather than an upgrade. I love the fact I can watch HD Freesat from within media Center too
Arthur Posted May 9, 2009 Posted May 9, 2009 Personally I'm waiting for SlySoft to release their SlyPlayer software before I get a BluRay drive for my PC. This should put an end to having to upgrade the player whenever the movie studios update the DRM used on the discs.
SService Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 First time I had the same problem. But now, I can play both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray with CyberLink PowerDVD Ultra v7.3.3319a on Windows 7. Maybe you can try my config in this pic below. gracy676 Posted October 1, 2009 Posted October 1, 2009 I think it is a wise decision to ignore blu ray because adding Blu-Ray support to Windows would increase the price of the operating system by $30. You have to buy a third party software to run blu ray.
