Prevent Theft

I was welcomed back to work after the Bank Holiday Weekend with the news that two of our HP Teacher Pc's had been raped and pillaged of the majority of the contents of their cases. The hard drives, DVD ROMs and memory have all been removed. I am interested to hear of the anti-thief measures implemented by other members. We already have padlocks fitted to the case but one of the cases was forcibly opened using a hacksaw!

TBH there's not much else you can do, if they're determined enough to use a hacksaw there's not much going to stop them. How did they have access to the building in the first place? That's probably more of a concern.

Anti-climbing paint, decent locks, cctv, having the police eyeball the site as part of their patrol at night and a SMT who'll prosecute is about all you can do.

If you really want to deter them then mark everything, lot of time and effort though.

 

Hot glue slows them down plenty.

marking might not do much to stop component theft (unless you mark every component but that really is a lot of work)

Smartwater might make them stop and think?

Smart water is meant to be the mutts nuts, no idea on the cost.

Website is as obtuse about cost as a BOSE acoustimass radio/cd player advert.

We have smartwater, it states that it will stay on your hands for a month if you have it on there, it took 1 wash with swarfegar to get it off.

Still with smartwater youd have to mark all the components still.

 

One of the schools i went to had strengthened metal cases around the machines, all you could do was turn them on and reset them.

I have a strategy that has not ben mentioned, but may just work.

Exploding die! 10% of pc's are fitted with exploding die, but there's no way of knowing which 10% that is!

Students are told about this in their daily (tv based) newsletter with an exampe added to enphasise the point.

The though of being covered in die may put some of them off!

How did they have access to the case and also the time to do that....

 

Even though I have the proper tools in a well organised (cough) toolbox, it still takes me around 45 - 60 seconds to remove everything and thats if i'm ripping things out left right and center. Might test this to see if i can get it down to anyless, wonder what other peoples records are?

 

What about using the screws that macs have in them or screws like the alloy locking bolts you have on your car? chances are people won't carry around that particular tool.
