Missing System Restore + Update Problems

Hi,

I am using a test PC with WinXP SP3 new install with only OS and drivers installed yet the System restore tab is missing when i right click on my computer and click on properties. Also i cannot install microsoft updates. It will let me download the updates but fails on everyone when trying to install them. I have searched for advice and changed registry values and tried other things people have advised (checked that the system restore service has started) but still when i log in as an administrator and try open system restore (from start>programs>accessories>system tools> system restore) i get "you do not have sufficient security privileges to restore your system" this happens both logged onto the network and also when i log on locally as an administrator.

 

I have reinstalled windows, reimaged the pc with an image i know system restore and updates works on.

 

Any Help would be apprieciated

Hopefully the following should help you.

 

Copy the following text and save it as a .reg file. Backup your registry. Doublce-click on this and you should then find the system restore option available.

As for windows updates, try this.

 

Copy the text below and save as a .bat file.

 

net stop wuauserv
net stop BITS

Ren c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wups2.dll -s

net start wuauserv
net start BITS

 

These fixes have worked wonders for me before, but I don't offer any warrenty, so make sure you;ve backed up your data first.

Hi Thanks for the help i have copied and run the registry files you gave me but still i have no System Restore tab and still cannot open the system restore application still getting "you do not have sufficient security privileges to restore your system"

 

I have just installed XP and SP2 and System Restore works fine until i add it to the network then when it restarts and i log on either as local admin or an admin on the network the System Restore doesnt work or the the updates.

System Restore can be controlled via Group Policy editor in

the addtional Administrative Tools for system administrators.

 

If not already installed, You may need to extract AdminPak.MSI from

SP2 or SP3 or aternatively, get it from the i386 folder on a Windows

Server 2003 setup disk. Install AdminPak.MSI (Double Click) and a

whole lot more items are added to your Administrative Tools. The

one you want does not have an Icon so, In the run box type:-

 

"GPEdit.MSC"

 

Navigate to:-

 

Local Computer Policy

Computer Configuration

Administrative Templates

System

System Restore

 

There you will find the keys

 

Turn off Sytem Restore

Turn off Configuration

 

Both should read "Not configured" in an untouched system.
