Movng FMS over to a new server

Hi Guys

 

we are thinking of moving our Sims server over to a new domain. Does any know of any documents that tell you how to move the fms infrastructure over to a new server/domain.

Essentially there's two parts - firstly the Sims share itself, which you should be able to move to a different server, but the more complex part is moving the database. Of course you'd need to re-install SQL 2005, but then the rest I am not sure of the exact procedure.

You should be able to detach the database from where it currently sits, or even just run a backup, then install SIMS afresh on the new domain, choosing to attach an existing database rather than create a new one. Attach your database through dbattach (or restore it, depending on which option you chose) and job done.

It's dead easy. Follow the following steps:

• Use dbattach to backup the SIMS and FMS databases (there's a different version of dbattach for each)
  
• Install SIMS server software onto new server (SIMSINST - select 'server' as the option)
  
• Copy shared folders from old server to new
  
• Copy DOCSTORAGE folder from old server to new (this is for the Document Server)
  
• Use the two dbattach jobbies to re-attach your backups
  
• Re-install clients to point to new server (unless it has the same name)

I have just been informed by our LA that the school should factor in our budget the cost of moving to SQL server 2008.

Apparently this is to do with new reporting tools and the replacement of Nova-T4 reporting.

The whole of SIMS\FMS is moving over to SQL 2008 soon. I think later this year.

The base release of Reporting Services 2008 and replacement for NT4 Reporting, both using SQL 2008, are due for release in March 2010.

Whatever password you set for the SQL Instance when you installed it should work.

Maybe not a good idea to paste any SIMS passwords on this forum since:

a. pupils read it

b. some people never change the default passwords

They're not exactly a secret, nor are they particularly difficult to guess... I'd be scared if 'password' wasn't the first try by a kid.

2/ a. And? Pupils should be able to get onto a SIMS\FMS machine

3/ b. Then they should read the Capita document with regards to setup SIMS\FMS again and review there policies. It clearly states YOU MUST CHANGE THE PASSWORD.

Having re-read the initial post, I think most have missed the point.

 

This is not FMS being moved to a new server, but a SIMS server (with FMS) being moved to a new domain.

 

In which case the only real problems you will have is the issues surrounding security, me thinks.

 

Re-do the security of your "Capita" area, this is where your data is stored.

 

Re-run SIMSPERM.BAT, found in your SIMS setups folder, on each workstation.

 

s:\sims\setups\simsperm \

 

Note: - The security group name is one you should have created in AD to allow easy control of users who need access to SIMS stuff, either create it, or replace the group name with each domain user-name. Easy if no-one hot-seats!

 

Add the to the loacl "Power Users" on each workstation.

yeah i use a gpo to set workstation security at the momment.
